Got a Tip?

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Actress Lucy Boynton Gets Her Own Rock Biopic About Singer Marianne Faithfull

Sometimes Hollywood film trends can be frustrating. A film hits big at the box office and wins a few Oscars and suddenly every studio around town wants to do their own version of it. That’s what happened with “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as the film won some Oscars, did almost $1 billion in box office, and now studios are tripping over each other to find rock stars that need to have their life stories told. However, in the case of the recent announcement that Lucy Boynton is headlining her own rockstar biopic, we’re starting to see that this rabid studio process might lead to something actually interesting.

According to Deadline, Boynton has signed on to star in a biopic about rockstar Marianne Faithfull. Why is this potentially better than an unwanted David Bowie biopic or the real story of Boy George? Well, not only is Boynton a great actress that has yet to get a chance to flex her muscle, the subject matter of this biopic isn’t going to be as cookie-cutter as the rest of these rock dramas.

Marianne Faithfull is an iconic singer that had a history interacting with some of the biggest bands in the world. From her own hit songs during the ’60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s to a torrid love affair with Mick Jagger, Faithfull has lived the rockstar life, but for many people in 2019, the singer isn’t someone that is immediately recognizable. This gives the filmmakers the opportunity to try something new, to give audiences a rock biopic that isn’t a dramatized Behind The Music story. Not to mention, there aren’t a lot of female-led rock biopics out there.

As mentioned, Boynton is one of the best up-and-coming actresses around but hasn’t really had the chance to headline something big. Most recently, fans have seen the actress in the Netflix series “The Politician,” but before that, her biggest roles were musical-ish, with appearances in the films “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the incredibly underrated “Sing Street.”

No word on who might write and direct the Marianne Faithfull story, but with Boynton attached and a production start date in summer 2020, we’ll find out soon enough.
