Got a Tip?

The Lovely Kate Winslet Wants an Oscar, I Want Her To Get One Too

Gracing the cover of this month’s Vanity Fair, Kate Winslet, airbrushed wonderfully as she intentionally invokes Catherine Deneuve and always adored in these parts, the five time Oscar nominee, the youngest actress ever to do so, chats about her upcoming roles in Sam Mendes’Revolutionary Road,” in which she threw up before shooting an emotional scene, and “The Reader” to being a “fat famous actress,” and something about running a bath too.

Basically, all I want to know right about now is whether or not this is Winslet’s year, Oscar-wise. Two high profile roles, one where she teams up with Leonardo DiCaprio with whom she made film history with in “Titanic” and the other being a highly plagued film that almost got cut out of the 2008 race altogether. I have a feeling that this will be her year, regardless of whether or not she is placed in the lead actress position or supporting actress for “The Reader.” She’s great in just about everything, but these two films are Oscar-tailored and there is no doubt in my mind that if they were to cause any stir whatsoever in the race for gold this year, Winslet would be their best shot.

Taking into consideration that Winslet had only two months to prepare for “The Reader,” and she adorns a German accent, and the fact that she is “the most talented actress of her generation,” DiCaprio’s words, not mine, lady luck might just be on her side – all speculation of course, since almost no one has actually seen either of her two films this year.

Stephen Daldry says of Winslet’s role in his film due out on December 12th, “It’s a part that is incredibly complicated. Not just in terms of the age span that the character makes, which is huge, and not just because it’s an extraordinary character, but also because she’s performing in the film where the majority of the actors are Germans speaking in English, and she’s English speaking in a German accent, and so the issues of matching accents are crucial to make sure everybody’s in the same world. What she had to do in two months is climb a mountain.”

Ms. Winslet on losing out on getting a golden statuette of her own no less than five times, “Do I want it? You bet your fucking ass I do! I think that people assume that I don’t care or don’t want it or don’t need it or something. It’s hard to be there five times, and I’m only human, you know? But I don’t go home and cry, because we’re all grown-ups here.”

Will she get her Oscar next year February? I sure do hope so.

  1. I have actually seen both The Reader and Revolutionary Road and can vouch for Winslet being nothing short of mesmerising in the both of them. You want her to get an Oscar? She probably will!
