In “Lovecraft Country,” things aren’t as easy as they might seem. As seen in the new teaser for the HBO series, exec produced by both J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele, even a journey as seemingly straight-forward as locating your missing father can lead you to cross paths with some deadly forces, both human and otherwise.
The teaser sets up the basic story of the new supernatural horror series—a man is on the hunt for his missing father, who left him a note about where to find answers. Unfortunately, that note leads the Black man on a mission through the Deep South in the 1950s where racists and literal monsters lurk, in a place called Lovecraft Country.

Here’s the synopsis:
HBO’s new drama series, based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff of the same name, debuts this August. The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
