Sometimes, a short film is created as its own project. However, that’s not always the case, as with Sally Potter’s upcoming short, “Look At Me.” Sometimes, a short film can be created almost by accident.
As seen in the trailer for the upcoming short film, “Look At Me,” which is set to debut at this year’s Venice Film Festival, Sally Potter has created a 16-minute film about male anger as seen through the characters played by Chris Rock, Javier Bardem, and Savion Glover. That would be enough to make most film fans excited. But that’s not what makes “Look At Me” unique.
“Look At Me” actually started as a scene from Potter’s most recent film, “The Roads Not Taken.” That film stars Bardem as a writer as he experiences various paths his life could have taken if things were different. One of those life paths would have led to the scene you see in “Look At Me.” However, when Potter got to the editing room, she realized that this was something that should live on its own.
“When I got into the cutting room, I saw how dynamic these titans of the entertainment world are together, their volatile, fiery on-screen relationship offset by the rhythms of the brilliant tap-dancer Savion Glover,” said Potter. “The destiny of the story was clear: it had nothing to do with the other project. It had to become a short film, a fast-moving portrait of conflict and love. The result is ‘Look At Me.’”
Thankfully, Bleecker Street has already picked up the distribution rights for the short film in the US and will have special screenings in New York and Los Angeles shortly after its debut at Venice. In fact, “Look At Me” is actually set to play alongside Sally Potter’s Oscar-nominated film, “Orlando,” at these screenings.
