Poor John Hillcoat’s “The Road.” It’s feeling the the unwanted stepchild of the the Weinstein Company if it wasn’t already.
It’s been bounced around more release dates than we care to remember and it finally landed a few months ago as a wide release on November 25 (the Wednesday before Thanksgiving) after being knocked off its October 16 limited release date.
Not anymore. That plans changed again and according to a email we received about local theater chain markets, the film has reverted back to a limited release roll-out plan (or at least it seems like that’s the case). So that means, for example in this specific case, Connecticut won’t be getting the film on November 25 and that opening date has probably scaled back to a simple New York/L.A. release that will expand afterwards. So if you’re not in those two cities, you’re probably going to have to wait a week at least. We liked the bleak film, but it’s been met with a lot of mixed reviews, albeit, ones that improved after Venice.
Remember TWC has had money issues and are probably putting all their pennies in the “Nine” basket at the moment. Viggo Mortensen’s chances of scoring an Oscar nomination for Best Actor seems slimmer and slimmer.
I hope this is just a rumor, but given the history of this film…it probably isn't.
well, as someone who lives in CT, let me just say that this blow goat. i really want to see this movie. now.
As someone who saw the screening of this with director/screenwriters being questioned over over an hour afterwards, I can only say this is very odd. I hope it does well in limited release, maybe it's on purpose to build up word of mouth? The movie was amazing and easily this and Up were the two best movies so far this year.
I expected this initially and was amazed it wasn't on a limited roll-out plan before now. But changing it this late in the game sucks, as I had already made plans to see it on Thanksgiving. Nothing like viewing this movie to make you give thanks for what you have eh?
While I've always said Thanksgiving Weekend was a horrible release for this movie, moving AGAIN at this point is worse.
With the generally good word-of-mouth and reviews this movie has been getting, the fact that it's now the 28th most-searched-for movie on IMDB moving the movie's release yet again seems oh so short-sighted.
My local arthouse was going to get it next week but when I saw it was no longer on their website I knew something was up. I called them and they said that the film was pulled and for now at least would only play in Manhattan. That sucks. I hope that it will get a wider release in the not too distant future. They are treating this film very poorly. It seems that the only thing the Weinsteins care about it Nine.
Ropes of Silicon reports it'll open in 31 areas on the 25th:

Not as good as a wide opening, but not as bad as just LA/NYC. I'm content since it'll play in my area!
