Listen: Massive 172-Track Playlist From All Of Wes Anderson’s Soundtracks Through ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’

nullRivaling Martin Scorsese at his height and his peer Quentin TarantinoWes Anderson’s visual aesthetic has been inseparable from the musical landscapes that he and music supervisor Randall Poster has assembled for his films. For Anderson obsessives and casual fans alike, Open Culture has found an exhaustive Spotify playlist that proves the Texas-born filmmaker’s musical taste is just as enjoyable separated from his films.

This playlist encompasses 172 tracks, runs for seven hours and covers everything from the music used in the black-and-white “Bottle Rocket” short and its feature-length adaptation to last year’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” The playlist showcases the wide range of music used in Anderson’s films and traverses far beyond tweeness and the British Invasion music which mark his films.

Sure, there’s still music from The KinksThe Rolling Stones and the like, but there’s also jazz music beyond the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s music for “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Unlike Scorsese and Tarantino, Anderson relies just as heavily on original score as his pin drop musical selections, so work by Devo‘s Mark Mothersbaugh and Alexandre Desplat are included.

Listen to the Spotify playlist below and let us know what some of your favorite musical moments in Anderson’s films are.

  1. maybe i\’m a damned idiot, but did it seem like an enormous amount of clicks and actions just to follow this playlist? i don\’t know… spotify could really streamline the process a ton.

  2. agreed this is not completely comprehensive but needle in the hay from Tenenbnums is there that\’s not nothing. intact to me it\’s the most pivitol music moment in that film.

  3. The decision to include certain pieces of score while excluding others is a little weird. Why only certain Mothersbaugh tracks for The Life Aquatic and nothing at all from, say, Tenenbaums? And where are all the other Satyajit Ray score selections from Darjeeling?

I know 172 songs seems like a lot, but this is far from comprehensive. That Mutato Muzika "Hey Jude" cover isn\’t even in here.
