Got a Tip?

Lisa Cholodenko’s ‘The Kids Are Alright’ Inches Closer

Some small movement on an indie film we’re looking forward to in 2010. Lisa Cholodenko’s (“High Art,” “Laurel Canyon”) latest, “The Kids Are Alright.” We briefly mentioned this one in the summer.
It has a stellar cast. Filming began in July and the film centers on a brother and sister (newcomer Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska) who set out to find their same-sex parents’ sperm donor, who totally upsets their family dynamic once he enters their lives. Wasikowska is of course Tim Burton’s title character in “Alice In Wonderland,” and also the upcoming star of Gus Van Sant’s “Restless.”

The male sperm donor in the film is played by Mark Ruffalo and the same-sex lesbian parents are played by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore. It sounds like an interesting idea.

Hollywood Studios Intl. has this home-made poster for the film on their site which is too small to read in detail (though we assume it’s just the aforementioned plot) and features the characters names, but not a lot of anything else.

We assume a film like this might debut at Sundance 2010? It’s finished and in the can, or at least in post-production and during AFM week, it was already sold to a few markets in Australia, France, Latin America and Greece.

This has to be a Sundance film, right? “High Art” and “Laurel Canyon” aren’t perfect films, but there are things to enjoy in both of them including a lot of the music choices in the latter (anyone who includes Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse on their soundtrack is ok in our books).

We’ll keep tabs on it. One of these days we should make a guess-list of what’s going to appear at Sundance next year, which of course is going to be a multi-city affair, which should prove to be an interesting experiment. Maybe “Blue Valentine” will show up there as well?
