Mmmm! Very interesting. Does anybody but us remember that after our contributors at Sundance saw “Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire,” they wrote that they spotted Harvey Weinstein rushing outside after the screening and getting on the phone?
We wondered then, would the film get picked up by the Weinstein Company?
Well, turns out there was something to that. Lionsgate is suing TWC in a preemptive move, claiming that the New York company is “threatened litigation” and does not have “any right, title or interest” in the film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
TWC, much like Overture films were apparently once circling the film, but Lionsgate snapped it up in an announcement made earlier this week, but evidently no deal was reached. But clearly TWC and Harvey think they have some ownership of the film on a… handshake deal? Who knows. All we know is Oprah’s not going to stand for this.
PS, the grand irony here? The NYTimes just wrote a long feature about the film that basically says: good luck marketing this difficult film to an audience! Maybe Weinstein should just count his blessings and cut n’ run.
