Got a Tip?

Lilly Wachowski Denies Being Involved With ‘Matrix’ Sequel But Gives Her Blessing & Is Hoping For The Best

Over the last few months, talk has heated up about whether or not the Wachowskis will be back for more ‘Matrix’ films. First, the rumor was they’re definitely coming back. Then, it was reported that they might come back. Now, according to one half of the filmmaking duo, Lilly Wachowski, the writer-directors are not going to be back. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t want to see it happen.

Speaking at a TCA Event, promoting her upcoming Showtime series “Work in Progress,” Lilly Wachowski was asked by /Film if she would be personally involved in any sort of ‘Matrix’ reboots or sequels. And she quickly shot down that rumor, at least for now.

“Well, I’m a little busy at the moment,” she said.

As mentioned, Lilly Wachowski is working on her Showtime series and doesn’t seem very interested in doing anything with “The Matrix” anytime soon. And honestly, it would appear that Warner Bros. really would like to get something from the franchise up and running sooner rather than later. With remakes, reboots, and revivals the overarching trend in Hollywood right now, any studio IP that hasn’t been brought back in some capacity is seen as a wasted opportunity. And when you have one of the most famous action-sci-fi film series of all time, you probably wouldn’t want it gathering dust on the shelf.

Wachowski said that she wouldn’t mind seeing the studio bring back her beloved franchise, but as long as it explores new territory and is better than the original series.

“I like it when stories go out into the world and then come back to you in different ways,” Wachowski said. “I mean, that’s what storytelling is all about. I’m part of a bigger thing. I don’t have any ownership over stuff like that, so whatever story anybody wants to tell, I can’t wait to hear. I hope it’s better than the original.”

Obviously, whether or not “The Matrix” needs to have a sequel or reboot is up for debate, but at this point, it’s likely to happen eventually. And it’s clear that everyone would agree with the filmmaker and hope for the best, even for a series that many would argue peaked with the first film.
