Film Independent announced the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Thursday morning and the bigger winner was A24 Films. The indie distributor took 18 nominations overall including two Best Feature nominees with “The Farewell” and “Uncut Gems” while the latter and “The Lighthouse” took five nominations each. Amazon Studios’ “Honey Boy” and Music Box Films’ under the radar “Give Me Liberty” earned four nominations each.

Netflix’s “Marriage Story” was also nominated for Best Feature but was also honored with the Robert Altman Award which goes to the film’s director, Noah Baumbach, and cast. That effectively took Baumbach, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johannson out of their respective categories, but is still a win for everyone involved.
Overall, this year’s nominees continued the recent trend of rewarding smaller, unhearlded films after a good part of the decade saw the Spirits feel like a pre-Oscars telecast. Besides “Give Me Liberty,” films such as “The Climb,” “Diane,” “Burning Cane,” “Luce,” “Clemency” and “The Third Wife” earned multiple nominations. That being said, this Spirit Awards telecast should have starpower. Adam Sandler and Robert Pattinson earned Best Male Lead nods, Jennifer Lopez earned a Best Supporting Female nomination for “Hustlers,” Olivia Wilde earned a Best First Feature nom for “Booksmart,” Elisabeth Moss and Rene Zellweger earned Best Female lead nods for “Her Smell” and “Judy,” respectively, and Shia Labeouf earned a Best Supporting Male nod for “Honey Boy.”
In a genuine surprise, Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life” earned a Best Feature nomination (“JoJo Rabbit” did not qualify). Most of the surprises were snubs, however. “Midsommar’s” Florence Pugh somehow wasn’t nominated for Best Female lead and Ari Aster’s summer hit earned just one nomination overall in Best Cinematography. Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain and Glory” didn’t earn a Best International Film nod and “Waves” earned just one nomination for Taylor Russell in the Supporting Female category.
Besides A24, NEON had a banner morning earning 10 nominations from “Parasite,” which only qualified for International Film, “Luce” and “Clemency.” Amazon Studios earned 8 nods for “Honey Boy,” “Invisible Life,” “Blow the Man Down” and “The Vast of Night.” Netflix earned 7 for “Marriage Story,” “See You Yesterday,” “High Flying Bird” and “American Factory.” IFC Films took six thanks to “Diane,” “Premature,” “Greener Grass” and “Sword of Trust.”
The 2020 Independent Spirit Award will be held Saturday, February 8 and broadcast live on IFC at 2 PM PT, 5 PM ET.
