Producer extraordinaire Scott Rudin has acquired the rights to David Levithan and Rachel Cohn‘s upcoming novel “Dash And Lily’s Book Of Dares,” and will team with writer-director-actor Lena Dunham in an adaptation for the screen.
Dunham broke out earlier this year at the SXSW Film Festival with her debut feature film “Tiny Furniture,” an indie-comedy centering on the life of a college graduate as she returns home to New York, which saw Dunham write, direct and star as protagonist, Aura. She has since teamed with another producing giant in Judd Apatow on a HBO coming-of-age comedy pilot about “the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20’s” that will also see her performing triple duties.
From the authors of “Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist” which itself was adapted into a film starring Michael Cera, “Dash And Lily’s Book Of Dares” follows the story of two teens, the titular Dash and Lily, both left alone in Manhattan during Christmas. When one finds the other’s red Moleskin notebook full of literary clues purposefully left behind in a bookstore, a back-and-forth exchange of clues and dares begins — each one revealing a layer of themselves — which ultimately leads to an undesirable encounter. It pretty much sounds a rehash, quasi-sequel to ‘Nick & Norah’ which itself didn’t exactly light the world on fire but hopefully Dunham, seemingly a major talent from all the attention she’s getting, can take the material to another level. In the mean time, “Tiny Furniture” hits theaters through IFC Films on November 12th; here’s the trailer.
