Got a Tip?

FX’s ‘Legion’ Casts Professor X As Series Is Set To End After Season 3

Even though the series is based on a Marvel comic and a spin-off of the “X-Men” universe, to call FX’sLegion” a superhero show is ridiculous. The series follows lead character David Haller, who is perhaps the most powerful mutant in the world but also highly unstable. And much like the character, the series itself is a bit unstable, challenging its viewers to follow along with each twist and turn. But it appears that there are a finite number of twists, as FX has announced the series is scheduled to end shortly.

Speaking at the TCA event, it was revealed that “Legion” would be ending after its upcoming third season. However, this has nothing to do with ratings, but solely is the decision of the show’s creator/mastermind Noah Hawley, who feels the series has reached its conclusion. But alas, that doesn’t mean fans might not see more “Legion” stuff in the future.

Jeph Loeb, Marvel TV boss, said (via Deadline), “From Marvel’s point of view, Noah told us the end of the story when he told us the beginning of the story. These characters, some of which are part of the Marvel library, will live on. I think of it as if this is the end of this graphic novel. If Noah came back to us in a day or a year, we hope that FX would want to tell the next story.”

But when you hear Hawley speak, it sounds as though the idea of the characters continuing on after the upcoming season is fairly far fetched. “Endings are what gives stories meaning,” Hawley said. “It felt like three acts of a story – this felt like natural place to end it.”

However, the final season isn’t without its own surprises, as comic fans found out that “Legion” will finally introduce David’s parents, aka Professor X and Gabrielle. Professor X, aka Charles Xavier, aka the creator of the “X-Men” will be portrayed by “Game of Thrones” vet Harry Lloyd. The role of Gabrielle will be played by Stephanie Corneliussen, who is best known for her role in “Mr. Robot.”

Of course, considering the series is perpetually shrouded in mystery, it’s unclear how/when/why “Legion” will introduce these characters. But we’ll just have to wait and see.
