Kristen Wiig is easily one of the more prominent comedic voices in the genre, thanks, in part, to her tenure at “Saturday Night Live,” showcasing her fantastic sense of humor and proving that an all-female cast can lead a gross-out raunchy comedy by leading Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids.” Now, as streamers continue paying top-dollar to get A-list talent onto their platforms, Wiig is heading back to the small screen with a little help from an unexpected person, veteran actress Laura Dern (“Marriage Story“) for Apple TV+.
According to Variety, Wiig is set to star and executive produce “Mrs. American Pie” with Dern also producing and in talks to nab a role as well. The comedy series is set in the early 1970s with Wiig playing the role of Maxine Simmons. A character that attempts to find a place among the high society of Palm Beach, Florida.
“Mrs. America Pie” has been given a 10-episode order and is based on the Juliet McDaniel novel “Mrs. & Mrs. American Pie” with Abe Slyvia (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Dead To Me”) adapting the project as both writer and showrunner. Tate Taylor (“Grace & Frankie“) is serving as director after working on feature films such as “The Help” and “The Girl On The Train.”
A synopsis for the Apple series was also provided by Variety:
“Set in the early ’70s, “Mrs. American Pie” follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) as she attempts to secure her place within the high society of Palm Beach. As she navigates the line between the haves and the have-nots, the series focuses on questions of who gets a seat at the table and what people will sacrifice to get there.”
It’s unclear what role Dern is looking at playing, but it is being called “key,” and it should be interesting to see her flourish in a comedic project. We wouldn’t be shocked if Dern is playing one of those Palm Beach high society folks that Simmons tries to win over.
