From simply the briefest of glances at actress Kristen Wiig's film career post-'SNL,' any hesitance on her part toward that decision should now be fully erased by the abundance of potential roles she has on deck. Since starring in indie comedy “Imogene,” which premiered at TIFF in the fall (review here), she's sidestepped any return to the “Bridesmaids” well for more intriguing fare, such as the ensemble comedy-drama "Hateship, Friendship," but now she may be prepared to take a turn in another major comedy franchise's sandbox instead.
Despite its script still being rewritten, and with only the original film's cast confirmed to return, “Anchorman: The Legend Continues” has nonetheless put the sights on Wiig for a lead role in the much-anticipated sequel. The comedy actress is being eyed to play the love interest opposite resident KVWN weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), although in what capacity remains uncertain for the moment. However, Wiig's inclusion is a logical choice for the Judd Apatow-produced film, and given her impeccable timing in the midst of broad comedy, an exciting one as well.
What is known about the film — as revealed from director Adam McKay himself — is that the plot concerns the “rise of the new media and 24 hour news cycle,” and also hopes to feature beyond Wiig a “murderer's row” of name talent in supporting roles. Obviously, then, Wiig is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the onslaught of talent joining Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, and Christina Applegate in their adventures, so look forward to many more as the film nears its March start date, with a release eighth months later in October 2013 apparently being eyed (though that seems like a ridiculously tight turnaround).
