Got a Tip?

Kristen Stewart, Ava DuVernay And Denis Villeneuve Bring Starpower To 2018 Cannes Jury

The 2018 Festival de Cannes might be lacking in noticeable starpower with the current films in competition, but they have more than made up for it with the main festival jury.  Cate Blanchett is already the Jury President and now she’ll be joined by more names notable to North American audiences than expected.

Familiar faces Kristen Stewart, Ava DuVernay, Denis Villeneuve and Léa Seydoux will head to la Croissette alongside Chinese actor Chang Chen, French filmmaker Robert Guédiguian, Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev and Burundian musical artist Khadja Nin.

Stewart most recently screened her short “Come Swim” at the 2017 festival.  In 2016 she walked the red carpet for Olivier Assayas’ “Personal Shopper” and Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society.”  Seydoux famously starred in “Blue is the Warmest Color” which won the Palm d’Or in 2013, the first time an actor shared the honor with their director.

Last year’s jury was head by Pedro Alomodovar and featured Will Smith and László Nemes, among others.

The head of the Un Certain Regard jury is Benicio del Toro.

The 2018 Cannes Film Festival will run Tuesday, May 8 through Saturday, May 19.  Look for full coverage during the entire festival on The Playlist.

      • Yes, Stewart!!! The only American actress to win an award from the French Academy. She has gone to Cannes four times with 4 movies that she was in as an actress and one as a director. She’s a year shy of 20 yrs in the business. She has lead movies that have generated over $4 billion dollars at the international box office. So, what’s so hard to accept about Kristen as a jury member?

        • “She has gone to Cannes four times with 4 movies that she was
in as an actress and one as a director.” yet she hasn’t won a damn
thing for either of her movies whether as an “actress” or as a
          “director”.
KStew would be nothing without Twilight Saga. Fremaux is a fan of hers for some reason and Olivier Assayas is considered a 2nd tier director in France. Huppert and Binoche did a movie with him back in the days. It’s been KStew since. How do you go from Huppert and Binoche to KStew?
What are the top French actresses that have worked with Assayas nowadays?

Seydoux has earned her spot in the Jury. Going back to 2007 she has had 6 movies in competion. Winning the Chopard Prize in 2009 at Cannes and the Palme d’Or in 2013. Nominated for 4 César Awards (French Academy).1 Lumières Award. 1Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur. 1 Cabourg Film Festival Award. 1Portuguese Online Film Critics Circle Award. 1 BAFTA nomination.

The upcoming Kursk with Colin Firth, Matthias Schoenaerts, Max von Sydow that is talked about about Seydoux being a potential 2019 Oscar nominee in Best Supporting Actress.

DuVernay has won Sundance. 1 Oscar nomination and way too many nominations

To summarize Kristen Stewart is the least deserving Jury members ever lmao

          • She won the Cesar for Clouds of Sils Maria and Juliette Binoche was in the that movie with her. ??? Juliette Binoche is working with Olivier Assayas on his next film and he is not a second tier director in France. That’s utter bullshit. In 2016, Assayas won Best Director Award (Cannes Film Festival) for Personal Shopper, with Kristen Stewart.

            Kristen has:
Actually WON a Cesar, not only nominated
Won a BAFTA Orange Rising Star
A SAG nomination as part of the ensemble for Into the Wild
A Best Actress Award from the Milan International Film Festival for Welcome to the Rileys
She won the National Society of Film Critics, New York Film Critics Circle, and Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Clouds of Sils Maria.

There’s also talk of Kristen Stewart being nominated for her first Oscar for her work in JT Leroy.

I’m not even going to bother to list all the other awards and nominations that she’s had over her long career. There are so many that there’s a separate Wikipedia page for her awards/nominations alone. She has EARNED her place. You’re kind of desperate. It’s cute.

    • lmao Ava has three critically acclaimed movies in her portfolio. The Cannes jury had the likes of Diane Kruger and Fan Bing Bing in its roster in the past, Ava is not the problem.
