Got a Tip?

‘Kong: Skull Island’ Gets 70mm Release

I’d heard rumblings about this throughout the week, and figured that Warner Bros. might make a special announcement, but instead, this news comes with a whisper instead of a roar: “Kong: Skull Island” is now playing in 70mm in select locations.

The format has slowly gained a resurgence in recent years, thanks in large part the efforts of Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, and Paul Thomas Anderson who’ve all released films in 70mm. However, blockbusters have gone analog as well, with Disney giving “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” a 70mm run last year, for example. However, given that most multiplexes are digital and 70mm projectors are in limited supply, you usually need to work to find a screening in the format.

The 70mm run of “Kong: Skull Island” is only in eight cities in North America. That might be frustrating, but Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ 70’s soaked movie looks great, and will undoubtedly also look terrific on the big film format. The only way studios are going to keep making 70mm prints is if they see there’s an audience for it. So, if you live in one the cities below, make the effort to see “Kong: Skull Island” in 70mm.

Plymouth — Willow Creek 12
Dallas — Look Cinemas
Montreal — Cinema Banque Scotia
Hollywood — Arclight
Sherman Oaks — Arclight
New York City — City Cinemas 1,2,3
Seattle — Cinerama
Oakland — Renaissance Grand Lake Theatre
