Family is an unavoidable consequence of existence. Whether we like it or not, those bound by DNA, blood, and bone somehow seem to form everything a person becomes (and possibly will be). It’s a subject that HBO’s “I Know This Much Is True” explores in-depth. The network seems to have a knack for showing the strange logic of familial situations. After all, they did give the world George R.R. Martin’s incestuous Lannisters, murderous Sopranos, and the disastrous Roy family.

Based on the book by Wally Lamb, the limited series features Mark Ruffalo as identical twins Dominick and Thomas. Ruffalo may be known to many as The Hulk In “The Avengers,” but he has more than earned his critical praise is other indie films. Most recently, Todd Haynes ”Dark Waters” has given the actor a chance to showcase important environmental issues in the true story of a lawyer’s fight against Dupont. The depth and care he conveys in the role of Robert Bilott is just what he’ll need while bringing Dominick to life.

In what could signal an even darker tone than the original material, Derek Cianfrance was brought on as director. Anyone who has seen “Blue Valentine” or “Place Beyond The Pines” knows what he can do with stories centered around fragile human connections. Unlike those journeys, the director will have to rely on Ruffalo instead of Ryan Gosling to hold up the slow burn level of energy this time.
