Rian Johnson’s upcoming murder mystery film, “Knives Out,” is crossing the Atlantic. Today, the people behind the BFI London Film Festival have announced that “Knives Out” is named the American Express Gala and will have its European premiere as part of the event.
“Knives Out” is Johnson’s first film since his 2017 entry in the “Star Wars” canon, ‘The Last Jedi.’ The film features a great cast in a modern twist on the classic Agatha Christie murder-mystery genre, as a detective is brought to a mansion to help investigate the death of the family’s patriarch.
“I’m thrilled to be screening ‘Knives Out’ at the BFI London Film Festival,” said Johnson. “This film was an attempt to capture the twisty fun of an Agatha Christie whodunnit, it’s a great pleasure to be showing it in the country responsible for the genre’s golden age.”
Even if Rian Johnson’s involvement as writer-director isn’t enough to garner interest, the all-star cast he has pulled together to star in the film is going to excite even the most casual of movie-goer. The ensemble is led by Daniel Craig, who appears alongside Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, and Jaeden Martell.

“With ‘Knives Out,’ Rian Johnson has crafted a devilishly clever and wickedly entertaining new crime caper,” Tricia Tuttle, BFI London Film Festival Director said. “As with his previous work, Johnson brings immense erudition and passion for the conventions of the genre he’s working in, but always makes something entirely his own. This is impeccably designed, with writing that keeps you guessing to the final moments and his extraordinary cast are at their arch and compelling best. ‘Knives Out’ is a whodunit, as sharp as the blade that killed the patriarch at the heart of the film and we are overjoyed to present the European Premiere as our principle partner, American Express’s Gala.”
Obviously, if you’re in the area at the right time, you should try to check out “Knives Out” as part of the BFI London Film Festival, when it begins on October 2.
