Got a Tip?

Kirsten Dunst: “Everyone Likes Our Spider-Man. C’mon, Am I Right Or What?”

As Sony teams up with Marvel to reboot Spider-Man yet again with this summer’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” some might already be weary of another webslinging franchise. After all, only three years have passed since “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” but on the flipside, Tom Holland seems to fit the role quite nicely, and this time around, Peter Parker gets to have out with the Avengers. But let’s be real, Sam Raimi‘s “Spider-Man” (and the sequels, each less successful than its predecessor) remain the high bar for the cinematic take on the character. Just ask Mary Jane Watson herself, Kirsten Dunst.

When asked by Variety about the Spidey reboots, the actress made her position perfectly clear: “I don’t care. Everyone likes our ‘Spider-Man.’ C’mon, am I right or what? Listen, I’d rather be in the first ones than the new ones.” Damn.

Even more, while some actors have a strange relationship with the blockbusters they make versus the more serious work they do, Dunst has no such trouble. “I wanted to be in that movie so badly,” she said about “Spider-Man.” “I loved it, and I wish we could have made a fourth.”

Indeed, Raimi’s mooted “Spider-Man 4,” which was rumored to have included Vulture and Black Cat, with John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway said to be contenders for those roles, respectively, was essentially kiboshed over the potential budget, and the studio instead chose to go down the reboot route with Marc Webb. And we all saw how that turned out.

So, we’ll see if ‘Homecoming’ can mark a step forward for the character on the big screen, but as far as Dunst is concerned, Raimi’s films are the pinnacle.

Errrrr….. Spider-Man 2 is one of the greatest superhero films EVER, guys…. and it made more money and was better rated by critics…. so not sure where that’s coming from?

  2. Haven’t seen the first in a while. Fond memories of it. I bet it may have aged a little poorly, but at the same time, objectively is a fine superhero movie, at worst.

  3. Willem (forget character) was the obvious villain in the first, but plot & Molina’s portrayal made sequel a HUGE improvement….

That said, I have Tobey’s second & Garfield’s first on DVD, so obviously split.
