‘First They Killed My Father’ Trailer: Angelina Jolie Directs True Story Of Spirit & Struggle

After riding out some early controversy, Angelina Jolie‘s “First They Killed My Father” hit the festival circuit, unspooling at both Telluride and Toronto to very good notices. However, sometimes films just get lost in the shuffle, and for whatever reason, ‘Father’ hasn’t generated much buzz. Hell, you might not even realize it’s currently on Netflix or playing in (very) select cinemas right now, but the streaming service is here to remind you that the movie is available to watch whenever you’re ready.

Led by Sareum Srey Moch, the film tells the true story of Loung Ung, who saw the deadly regime of the Khmer Rogue in Cambodia rise to power when she was a young child. Here’s the official synopsis:

Directed by Angelina Jolie, FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER is the adaptation of Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung’s gripping memoir of surviving the deadly Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1978. The story is told through her eyes, from the age of five, when the Khmer Rouge came to power, to nine years old. The film depicts the indomitable spirit and devotion of Loung and her family as they struggle to stay together during the Khmer Rouge years.

“First They Killed My Father” is now streaming, and apparently playing on the big screen too, though you’ll really have to look for it.
