As we said in our 5 Things You Can Expect From Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Polarizing, Moody & Brutal ‘Only God Forgives‘ feature, don’t believe the hype that the film was booed at Cannes. Yes, response was vocal, but the movie also earned applause and frankly, it’s something you need to witness with your own eyes. And a brand new trailer is here to give you another tease of what’s to come.
Tonally falling somewhere between “Valhalla Rising” and “Drive,” the latest from Refn takes the neon slickness of the latter and gives it the slow burn treatment of the former for a truly unique experience. Dialogue is minimal (Ryan Gosling says less here than in “Drive,” and much of the movie’s dialogue is in Thai), and the story, by appearances, is thin (a vengeance tale, pitting two unstoppable men against each other), but the subtext running throughout is rich. Yes, Gosling’s character has more to him than a five o’clock shadow and brooding visage, and when the blood comes…well, Refn doesn’t hold back.
Check out the new trailer. “Only God Forgives” arrives on July 19th.
The trailer uses almost every line delivered in the movie. I wish the film was as short as this promo, which is blatant at its misrepresentation of the picture. The film would be perfectly acceptable as a 2 minute sizzle reel. But at 90 mintues, it feels like a horrible, portentous slog.
In my opinion, 'Only God Forgives' will be a masterpiece in critics' eyes someday. Like years ago Kubrick's 'The Shining.' I was bored watching first 30 minutes 'OGF' and I was very disappointed in Refn. But after a few days 'Only God Forgives' is still in my head and I loved it. This movie is very magnetic. It's the best example of what neo noir can offer modern viewers.
There is substance, but the film is mainly a stylish evocation of expression. 'Art for art's sake'
Ryan Gosling is always the same. Loser.
AMAZING!
style over substance here, but what a damn good style! i hope NWR collaborates with a talented writing partner soon to add some much needed depth to his stories.
What's the music?
This looks great! I'm glad you liked it Kevin, I still have hope.
Is this also hitting VOD?
