Kevin Smith Says ‘Batman V. Superman’ Part Of WB’s 5-6 Movie Comic World Building Plan

Batman Vs. Superman Ben Affleck Batman

When Warner Bros. moved “Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice” to 2016, we always knew it would mean two years of speculation and rumors. What we didn’t know is that Kevin Smith, of all people, would be the biggest mouthpiece out of the gate. The best bro of Ben Affleck, has already sounded off that we might see multiple batsuits and vehicles for the Caped Crusader, and now he’s teasing WB’s entire vision for their DC Comics’ properties.

On a recent Hollywood Babble-On podcast (via Comic Book), Smith essentially posited that WB is taking the reverse-Marvel approach—building out their universe first, before making direct character sequels. It’s an interesting notion, and given how fast the studio is rushing toward “Justice League,” which is being shot back-to-back with “Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” one that makes a lot of sense.

“But look, they’re obviously beginning something, and there’s a stretch of these flick… From what I understand now, it’s no longer like, ‘This is Superman 2.’ They’re not doing these things. They’re doing like, ‘Here’s Man of Steel. Here’s Batman/Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ The next one is not like a sequel to one of the characters. They’re just going to keep building their universe for about five or six movies,” Smith said. “But all of them…it’s supposed to tell one massive story, which is all Justice League oriented.”

Uh, shocker? It’s not the most surprising revelation, but in case you needed any more affirmation that WB wants to exploit one of the major brands under their roof, this is it. But what does Smith think about that goofy title?

“It’s a bit of a mouthful. And also, I don’t know why Batman V. Superman. Why not just throw the ‘s’ in there? Or spell it or something like that,” Smith pondered. “Or honestly, every comic book fan on the planet, who is a DC comic book fan, I think we all wanted to see ‘Batman/Superman: World’s Finest.’ ”

Anyway, the finest arrives on May 6, 2016.

  1. MOS was 1of the greatest films ever, marvel ppl go f urselves.TELL ANY1 WHO'LL LISTEN 2GO SEE DAWN OF JUSTICE,This film has to pass the $1bill mark so the encouraged to make sequels for clark n bruce..even a stand alone 4 Orin.ignore creeps like HATENU52

  2. i reckon theyll either give us a new batman, as in beyond, but maybe thats too far ahead for their vision, so maybe just an old batman that mostly sits around the watchtower and nightwing or someone else kind of just coming into the league or, you get the idea, then doing a new run of batman films but making them prequels to batman vs superman where we already know hes an older more worn batman

  3. All this hoopla and these analytical comments about a movie that's 2 yrs away is giving me a stomach ache. Yes Affleck is Batman and there are a million other actors they could have gone with selecting to be Batman or even choosing a different title. But this is it. I am excited for thse new universe and I cannot wait to see what Snyder and WB have planned for post BVS and post JL.

  4. its so hard to fit the whole story into movies that are only an hour and a half to two hours long I'm just happy they keep making them I love DC characters DC is awesome and I can't wait to see the rest and the direction they're going

  5. As much as I wan't to be excited about these films, I have a bad feeling about them. I think it's a mistake to have the new Batman based on DKR, Dark Knight Returns was created to be a solo story with no connection with a larger JL world, when they tried to open it up into such a world in Dark Knight Strikes Again it turned out horrible. And I've got a feeling that them trying to get to JL in as few films as possible will hurt them in the long run.

  6. People are just too keen on the past and can't move on and accept changes in life. MOS was the greatest superhero movie since The Dark Knight Trilogy and everyone that hated it we're just too stubborn to see it. There hasn't been any Superman film before that showed the real comic feel until MOS. Its part of the modern trend with realistic elements combined with hard core comic aspects. MOS is following the exact same formula than TDK trilogy and everyone loved TDK. The DC universe has always been darker, grittier, whether it's Batman or Superman. Those who complain about the MOS2 or JL announcements are just becoming this Internet cancer.

  7. I recognize MOS was decent at best. So I can't judge much of this so called DC versed based on 1 movie alone, while its sequel hasn't revealed anything major. More speculation from the fanbase than anything else. I can figure out where it might head but in doing so I become angry because the core traits of the source material are watered down like X Men movies

  8. Why do these MOS haters always seem to have sand in their vagina, get over it already, the film is almost a year old and yet the haters are still bitching with a passion on how much it sucked. The thing that puzzles me the most is that the people who bitch and complain about something so irrelevant such as a 2 hour movie have nothing better to do than troll a website. Why don't you do nothing, bitter, nerds use your energy and skills of pointing out holes in movies and use it to make movies that don't suck, wouldn't that be a better use of your time rather than sit behind a computer to bitch. In the end it doesn't really matter because you people are so god damn retarded that you just bitch at me because you don't understand the truth.

  9. are you guys gonna hate all the time can't you just be happy that they're making the movies about our favorite characters and can't wait to see the rest of the movies following

  10. I Know what their plan is. Put out one movie every year or two . Directed by that hack Zack Snyder and written by that other hack David Goyer. And all of them are guaranteed to suck.

  11. It sucks that not only are they thinking and planning on one crappy movie but a series of them in this Nu52 style. Hopefully they lose money and the joke is on them in the end. I'm guessing the first flop will make money because of curiousity and hope for something good to come of it. But after that it's all down hill! Snyder and Smith need to have their balls fed to the wolves for destroying Superman and the rest of the Justice League. The first Man of Steel was a piece of crap and isn't even worth the flush from my toilet. The story was too dark and the costume looked like an evil version to the original. And lets not forget that he was a killer by the end of the movie. SUPER SHlT is more like it. And this next film already sounds like Saturday Night Live on crack.

  12. Just hoping the Jokers not in this. Batmans older now so the Joker is already dead right. And Batmans beef with Superman is that he killed Zod… "Do you know how many times I wished to kill the Joker, Kent? Did you kill Zod because you did not have a choice or did you murder that man because he killed your father? I have found that you always have a choice!". But the Scarecrow is another thing please let the Scarecrow be in this, pointed hat included! And even if we don't get the Flash yet let's get at least a cameo from GORILLA GROD! Does anyone see where I'm going with this???

  13. I like the idea of several movies being part of a larger whole. It worked well for the Jason Bourne movies. The second film was a bit weak, but seen as part of the whole story is not as bad as it was initially. It's good to see WB not chasing Whedon and the Marvel Universe currently in production but striking out in a different direction entirely. They took a chance on Batman Begins and it paid off, let's see if this does as well…

  14. MOS was a bigger flop than WB would like to admit. To save face and to coax more money from unsuspecting rubes was to throw there only cash cow Batman into the mix. Unfortunately where they fail in their expansion is retaining Snyder at the helm. Until he's dropped the whole thing is just a cash grab fiasco. For every Iron Man, Dark Knight there are a dozen Steel, Green Lantern pictures; the problem with WB is they thrive on the latter. Despite my personal dislike for this whole 'Marvel Universe' plague consuming Hollywood, I have to give Disney/Marvel credit for at least semi-attempting to maintain a relationship with its fan base.

  15. If the marvel approach was successful, it was for a reason. I don't think reversing it will be successful. Justice League without adequate buildup will fail (or at least not be as successful as it should). You have to build a new moviegoing fanbase (and impress the old) for each character first.

  16. Regarding the v. and vs. thing…. "v." is the abbreviation for versus when the adversaries are single people, like Batman v. Superman, Roe v. Wade, McEnroe v. Bjorg. "vs." is used for teams, such as Yankees vs. Orioles.
