“…22 movies in, and we’ve got another 20 movies on the docket that are completely different from anything that’s come before—intentionally,” Kevin Feige said last month about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the next pair of ‘Avengers‘ movies. However, that statement was made before it became a very real likelihood that Disney was going to buy the movie and television arms of Fox. Needless to say, if and when that deal goes through, it’s going to be a massive game-changer, but more importantly for Feige, it’ll bring a boatload of Marvel characters back under their roof. And he can’t wait to get his hands on them.
Deadline reports that Feige is reportedly “eager” to have the X-Men at his disposal, and wants to “cross-pollinate the rich swarm of characters with the existing Marvel franchise heroes.” Well, duh. The storytelling opportunities it would open for Feige are endless, and it ensures that the franchise could go on and on, in countless varieties, forever (to those who have predicted the death of superhero movies, you’re wrong).
The big question remains what will happen to mutant movies currently in development at Fox such as “Gambit,” “X-Force,” and “Multiple Man” once they move under the Marvel and Disney roof. Undoubtedly, Feige will want to put his hands on them and make sure they are patterned into the fabric of the MCU.
And in case you’re wondering how Fox execs feel about all this, X-Men producer Laura Shuler Donner told Vanity Fair about moving to Marvel, “I would love it, I would love it. But it’s not for me to say.”
There are many moving parts in the Disney/Fox deal, but one of the most lucrative, at least from a blockbuster standpoint, is how the already mammoth Marvel will grow even bigger. The rest of Hollywood may just want to give up on trying to catch Marvel; they could soon be their industry unto themselves, if they’re not already.
I guess a legit question/concern would be, Would Disney/Marvel have allowed such movies as R Rated Deadpool or a movie like Logan had it been pitched to them? Would they take such chances with Marvel characters? I can’t help but think they would not.
If this merger happens, Netflix becomes even more important for artists who want to experiement and have artistic control over their work IMO.
Just came here to say just that. I really wonder, since Marvel/Disney do own the rights to the characters in the Netflix shows, how edgy they’re willing to go. What happens to The Punisher when the new Disney streaming service comes around? And if they do end up owning Deadpool, is the next sequel PG-13?
Seeing as the current Punisher, as it is today, is ultimately owned by Disney and Disney has 0 issues with how the character was shown on Netflix, I very seriously doubt it would change much. You do realize Disney has the last ultimate say on all the Netflix shows before they air, right? If they had an issue with how the character was done, they wouldn’t have let it aired to begin with. Disney can make a dark and gritty super hero storyline. The Netflix shows are proof of that. They just need to continue to give the reigns to creators and producers with a clear vision.
I have a feeling characters like Deadpool will stay the way they are. It would be a crime to change him right at his peak. People don’t realize that Disney is the one who funded Quentin Tarantino (and all of Miramax for that matter) to make all of his movies. The reason Disney made most of it’s money in the 80’s was because of those kinds of movies. So if they just put movies like Deadpool and Logan under a separate umbrella of sorts (i.e. Marvel Max) they could easily keep them the same way. I think it would be hilarious to have Deadpool in the Avenger where he just breaks the fourth wall with censors, or telling the audience that the house of mouse won’t let him be himself in these movies. I think it’d work better than we think.
Uhm, you do realize that the Netflix Marvel shows are ultimately owned by Disney, right? Those shows are actually part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in their own right, and Netflix’s deal with Disney a few years ago is exactly what made them possible. They’ve even referenced the first Avengers film in Daredevil. Disney can go dark and allow artists that freedom. Those shows are proof of that.
That’s a good point, but I think they way they treat their TV vs the Movies may differ too. They do seem to take too much control with their movies, as with Ant-Man and Edgar Wright leaving the production and going further the many changes with Star Wars properties and the revolving directors there.
Hopefuly they do allow directors more creative control.
I don’t know about taking to much creative control. They’ve seemed to have given Marvel a lot more creative freedom than most studios. Hence the stark contrast between the settings of the mainstream MCU and the Netflix shows. I think, so long as they follow a certain general storyline that won’t contradict with the grander scheme, so long as they follow certain guidelines to hit the audience they’re targeting, and so long as they continue to do well and make money, Disney doesn’t really care. At the end of the day, all they really care about is what’s at the bottom of the balance sheet and income statement.
If Disney did manage to buy Fox, FX and FXX are part of the deal they’re going for too. That would give them a couple networks they can use to target an older, more mature audience than ABC, Disney, and Freeform will allow. It also gives them the Fox Movie Channel, which could definitely be a more mature arm for the likes of Deadpool and other films that don’t quite fit ABC, Disney, and Freeform. It would certainly give them some new avenues to continue to build all their brands, the kid friendly and more mature ones included. They certainly aren’t strangers to adult stuff. They’ve been doing stuff targeted more for adults just as long as they’ve been doing stuff targeted for children and the family.
I say, seeing how well the MCU has been, how well Star Wars has turned out so far, how well Pixar and Walt Disney Studios animation films are turning out so far, and even how well their live action remakes have been doing, it’s hard to bet against what Disney can do. They’ve had very few bombs in recent years. My money is on Disney to handle things right because, at the end of the day, they’re gonna do what they believe is most fiscally sound, no matter the rating.
“Uhm, you do realize that the Netflix Marvel shows are ultimately owned by Disney, right?”
This Netflix argument is getting tired. The Netflix shows are low budget, hence the lesser scrutiny from Disney compared to the films.
“They’ve even referenced the first Avengers film in Daredevil.”
And that’s as best you’re gonna get of the films being tied to the Netflix shows. You’re not gonna see characters from the films popping in the show and vice versa.
The point is would Disney have the guts pull like what Fox did with Deadpool and Logan, hard-R major cinematic releases that are still tied to their PG-13 counterparts of the same franchise???? I don’t think so…..
And sorry, XCU has its share of crappy films, but their Quicksilver is way better than MCU’s. I wonder how their gonna merge all this. A reboot would be a shame, cause then we will be stuck with MCU’s pathetic but more importantly dead Quicksilver.
Well, first off, you are wrong. The Netflix shows, how they go, is determined by Marvel, which is owned by Disney. Marvel just needs to find a good time to pop them into the grander MCU. Problem is they are darker stories from less popular characers than the Marvel mainstream character base. Netflix was usedas a cheap launch pad for them as part of Disney’s deal with Netflix a few years back.
As far as hard R, you do realize Disney’s ultimately behind Sin City right lol? Disney’s also behind Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. Deadpool isn’t even close to as hard an R as Disney has already done. Yeah, as long as it makes them money, Disney won’t care even if Deadpool was rated X lol.
They would have to start over with the X-Men franchise for it to work in the MCU, right???
Yes that would be the most likely case.
I think it would be great for the franchise. Possibility of them bringing back Wolverine. I love the idea of them buying Fox. #infeigewetrust
Not necessarily. If they did something like House of M, Wanda could not only remake the world, she could theoretically create an opening to other dimensions in the multiverse. She could pull in the new mutants and the new xmen from days of future past.
Yes and no, because Deadpool could still exist as a self-referential, world-warping amalgam of all the universes.
Probably, cause how could you explain two different Quicksilvers?
It’s perfect timing for Phase 4, since Avengers 4 is supposed to the “end of the current group” or whatever it is. I’m just excited to see Dr. Doom and Galactus eventually.
I mean, the real benefit here would getting rid of Singer, right? Jesus that guy is the worst.
He’s a pedo.
The idea of having mutants in the MCU is stupid. Mutants would do away with any need for the avengers. Why would you need Hawkeye, Cap, Iron Man, Black Widow, etc, etc. When there is a mutant for every occasion that would be literally 20 times more powerfull than any of them. Even the Hulk and Thor would struggle to beat some of the mutants.
That makes 0 sense. All those heroes and mutants have been co-existing in the comics for over 50 years.
What works in the pages of a comic may not work too well on the screen. As someone who has never read the comics but has seen all the films, it would seem rediculous to have all the heroes listed above when you could have any number of mutants, from any heighbourhood in the world, who would be far more powerfull.
In a world full of powerful mutants why would you need a guy in a tin suit?
Because the guy in the tin suit is a technical genius who shoots missiles and has a strength augmented 100 times over lol. Don’t underestimate what the Avengers are truly capable of.
One, Hulk IS a mutant actually. So is Spiderman. Technically, one can argue Captain America is seeing as he was also mutated by a serum.
Two, not really. Thor, according to Marvel lore, is one of the strongest characters of the ENTIRE Marvel catalog. Hulk, according to Marvel lore, gets stronger and stronger the angrier he gets to the point he can destroy entire planets with his strength. He to, categorically, is one of the strongest and most indestructible characters in the ENTIRE Marvel catalog. Either one of them ALONE would be enough to challenge any of the X-Men.
