Got a Tip?

Kerry Washington In The Mix To Play Broomhilda In ‘Django Unchained’

While nothing is official on Quentin Tarantino‘s highly anticipated slave/western/vengeance flick “Django Unchained,” this is the way it’s shaping so far: Jamie Foxx would play the titular Django, who under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz, squares off against Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) the brutal owner of mixed race club and his top slave, the manipulative Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), in order to free his wife Broomhilda…which brings us to this latest bit of news.

As the trades chased the news of Foxx being “chosen” to play the lead in Tarantino’s film, Variety offered up a new morsel of info, revealing that Kerry Washington is in the mix of contenders to play Broomhilda in the film.

In our script review of “Django Unchained” we said that the character itself is kind of essentially amounting to the damsel in distress of the picture, who really loves her man, and…that’s about it. The tricky thing about casting this part is the fact the role would require a fair amount of nudity which might nix the interest of some of the bigger A-list type names (ie. Zoe Saldana or Paula Patton). Again, there isn’t much to the part and while we’d love to see someone like Taraji P. Henson or Naomie Harris (who is being lured for “Bond 23“) jump into the film, we won’t be surprised if a smaller name winds up snagging the part — we suggest Meagan Good (”Eve’s Bayou,” “Brick,” “D.E.B.S”) or Teairra Mari from “The Lottery Ticket“.

An interesting bit to keep an eye on regardless, and we’re sure more names will surface in the coming days. Lots more parts still to cast with a lot of time to get it together. Filming starts later this year, with a Christmas Day 2012 release date scheduled.

  1. Tarantino is so dumb. "Broomhilda" is the name of a cartoon witch! What he really meant was, "Brunhilda." When the movie comes out everybody can laugh about it.

  2. The names that are being considered for the role are being thrown around by the completely ignorant. This role calls for a beautiful dark-skinned actress, Broomhilda is a slave probably straight off the boat from Africa or and in Hollywood, that almost does not exist. I\’d like to see actress Denise Milfort in the role. She\’s the only one who CAN do Broomhilda justice.

  3. I congratulate each and every African-American male and female actor who had the integrity, strength of character, and courage to choose to pass by this story of exploitative degradation, patronizing dominance, and theatrical humiliation.

The fantasy of white male rape (humiliation, dominance, degradation, torture) of Black females has taken on an even more insidious meaning with the arrival of First Lady Michelle Obama and her two daughters to the White House. Stephen King\’s Bag of Bones and Robert Kirkman\’s Walking Dead comic exhibited the hideous thoughts lurking below the creative process. Both of the rape scenes in these works were brutal, detailed, extensive, violent, and hate-filled. And now Quentin Tarantino wants to glorify this sick, sociopathic fantasy for the fanboys who are eager to celebrate their frustration with and hatred of Black American females.

Someday, Octavia Butler\’s Kindred will be made into a movie and I will view that story of a complex, three-dimensional, and intelligent reaction to antebellum sociopathy twice on opening weekend. One day, we\’ll see the story of slavery told from the slave\’s perspective (as the main character not as the sidekick to the hero) and it will be a day of revelation.

  4. She\’s not exactly who I had in mind for this part of a persecuted and exploited slavewoman…Kerry is extremely classy and puts forward a sophisticated onscreen presence. I don\’t know if that would mesh too well with this particular role.

  5. That was before she had a baby. It is a different ballgame now that she is a mother. A useless role like this is not worth accepting imo. This would be one more bad role for her. She isn\’t the greatest actress but she can do better than this, jumping the broom and just wright. even MI: 4 better than this.

and in black hollywood, she is light skinned and gorgeous, she is pretty much A list off of that alone.

  6. Bah….the role of Broomhilda is a pretty thankless part. I would be surprised if any A-lister would actually want it.

I\’m looking forward to who will be cast as Ace Woody as, next to Candie and Stephen, that\’s the meatiest villain part.

But in all honesty, the script was underwhelming. Im hoping some things get changed and some plot holes get filled up.

If Foxx is indeed locked as sources indicate, i will lose even more interest in this.
