Perhaps this is why the new transparency sucks and why a salient argument can be made for the halcyon days of film development behind closed doors: watching the back and forth progress and decline of David Cronenberg‘s gestating “Cosmpolis” is heartbreaking. First, it’s an A-list project out the door with Colin Farrell, Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti and then it’s a slightly less desireable project with Robert Pattinson and Keira Knightley in the leads instead of Farrell and Cotillard who bailed for a tentpole (“Total Recall“) and a baby, respectively (Cotillard is pregnant, the dream for Playlist suitors is collapsing).
Knightley is part of Cronenberg’s upcoming “A Dangerous Method” co-starring the excellent cast of Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen, so co-signed by them, hell, co-signed by us. But her confirmation in the film was never 100%. She must have been in some sort of discussion as French financiers Alfama Films jumped the gun and listed Knightley as part of the cast in January and tipped us off to the fact that Cotillard had left.
Perhaps they spoiled the deal entirely because if Knightley was in talks to take the lead female role in the picture, it appears she’s not now.
While reps for the actress have declined to comment thus far (including several of our inquiries to U.K. and U.S. reps) according to Up and Comers, Knightley won’t be working on back to back Cronenberg films as confirmed by her PR folks. That’s a shame if only because a name like Keira Knightley does make a David Croneberg film easier to finance. So now it’s just RPatz and Giamatti. A match made in heaven, no?
Who will fill into the high heel shoes she almost took? Your guess is as good as ours, we’re just glad that “Twilight” fans know who David Cronenberg is now. Isn’t “The Brood” wicked!? Still a couple of months to find a lead actress as production on the film is now scheduled to start on May 23rd.Update: Reps for Knightley confirm the Up and Comers report stressing that she was never actually “on” the project.
Sorry, I have to ask after reading here a couple of reports about Cosmopolis…are you guys like those gossip-sites who bash R-patzz to get hits? At least show some respect for Cronenberg\’s and Giamatti work!
Gotta love the digs you take at \’Twilight\’. Surprised you left out the \’sparkly vampire\’ line as well. I\’ve become a fan of Rob just this past summer due to his interviews and then checking out Remember Me first. I resisted the Twilight craze and just saw it after checking out RM. You get on him for Twilight and establishing himself somewhere to when he could actually choose his roles. And you take Twilight too damn seriously. It\’s an enjoyable movie(the numbers don\’t lie that someone is enjoying it and others that claim they don\’t obsess about it) that was never pretending to be Shakespeare. It was written as a young adult female series and has expanded on that audience as the films hit. So STFU. Rob fans age in range. We aren\’t all teens. I\’m in my 20s and, surprise, I have known and seen Cronenberg films so to hell with that stereotype as well. It just irks you azzhats that these people genuinely want to work with Rob and you really need to get a grip at taking shots at Rob who is a rare combination in Hollywood and is going to prove you azzhats wrong. Maybe why the panic that he is involved in this project because he is a lot more than a handsome face.
Now she is an a-list? Not that long ago The Playlist was hating on her for being a downgrade from Cotillard..

I am 42. A-List applies to actors who have won critically acclaim for their movies for years, not just someone who is popular because of a huge teen franchise. For example great actors like Sean Penn and and Leonardo DiCaprio. I think it is insulting to actors like this to compare someone like Rob to them. You realize Rob is only getting roles right now because of his popularity in Twilight, don\’t you? Oh and not everyone goes gaga over the guy just because hes Edward Cullen.

How would Collin Farrell have made this an A list project?
Last I checked, \”Ondine\” \”Alexander\” \”Triage\” \”Pride and Glory\” \”Miami Vice\” \”The Way Back\” and every other movie he\’s been the star of in the last 5 years have flopped miserably at the box office. \”In Bruges\” had good reviews but not exactly big box office either.
Same with Marion Cotillard…her name means nothing to most US audiences, she\’s just Leo\’s wife in Inception.
I agree, I\’d love to see it with the original cast that was rumored, more so than the current one, but at the same time, just because you like someone doesn\’t make them A-List. Are you counting Farrell as A-List because he is in a remake of \”Fright Night\” opening in August?

Rob Pattinson is the best. He\’s A-list already due to his awesome performances in Twilight and Remember Me! You\’ll see…this guy is better than Clooney, Leo, and Depp rolled into one. I\’m sure all the top actresses in Hollywood like Reese Witherssppoon will be dying to take this role. They\’ll get someone better than Kiera.
