Keira Knightley is probably best known around these parts for her Academy Award-nominated roles in “Pride & Prejudice” and “The Imitation Game.” However, she’s also been in quite a few major Disney films, including the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise and the upcoming “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” in which she’ll portray the Sugar Plum Fairy. But all that Disney goodwill only goes so far in her household, as she has banned some classic Disney films from ever being seen by her young daughter.
While appearing on a recent episode of “Ellen,” Knightley explains why she has banned some classic animated films from her house:
“’Cinderella.’ Banned. Because she waits around for a rich guy to rescue her. Don’t! Rescue yourself. Obviously! And this is the one that I’m quite annoyed about because I really like the film, but ‘Little Mermaid.’ I mean, the songs are great, but do not give your voice up for a man. Hello! But the problem with ‘The Little Mermaid’ is I love ‘The Little Mermaid!’ That one’s a little tricky one — but, no, I’m keeping to it.”
However, she isn’t completely anti-Disney, as there are a few films that she gladly watches with her young child. Not sure if Knightley was just saying it because she was sitting opposite DeGeneres, but the actress name drops “Finding Dory” as one of her daughter’s favorites, as well as a couple other contemporary animated films.
“‘Dory’ is a big favorite in our house,” Knightley said. “’Frozen’ is huge. ‘Moana’ is fine. Totally fine.”
With her openness about not being happy with some of the classic Disney Princesses, Knightley echoes a sentiment that seems to be popular nowadays. With the rise of the current political climate and its effect on female issues, many women are looking back at those early Disney features and commenting on how the leads are not to be idolized, due to various reasons, as the actress alludes to.
We’ll have to see how her character, Sugar Plum Fairy, and the young lead actress Mackenzie Foy represent themselves when “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” hits theaters November 2.
