It’s hard to believe, but it’s been almost 20 years since Katie Holmes starred in the teen drama “Dawson’s Creek.” The actress, who has gone on to star in numerous films and TV series, is now going behind the camera for her next film, “All We Had,” and there’s no lack of drama in the first trailer.

In “All We Had,” Holmes, who stars and directs, plays an impoverished single mother in the mid-2000s who does whatever it takes to help support her rebellious teen daughter. Judging by the trailer, which seems to give away many of the story beats, “All We Had” seems slightly formulaic, leaning hard on love interests, fights, and lots and lots of tears. Here’s the official synopsis:
For fifteen-year-old Ruthie Carmichael and her young mother, Rita, life has never been stable. Fleeing Rita’s latest boyfriend, they find themselves living out of their beat-up car, and heading east in search of a better life. When money runs out and their car breaks down, they become stranded in a small town where Rita ultimately lands a steady job waitressing at Tiny’s, a local diner where they begin to develop a family: tender-hearted Marty, the owner of the diner, and Pam, a transgender waitress with big dreams who becomes Ruthie’s closest friend.
The film, which debuted at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, is based on the bestselling 2014 novel by Annie Weatherwax. “All We Had” also stars Eve Lindley, Richard Kind, Luke Wilson, Judy Greer and Stefania LaVie Owen. “All We Had” is set to debut in theaters and VOD on December 9th.
