Got a Tip?

Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Michael Pena & More Dial Up John Hillcoat’s ‘Triple Nine’

Labor Day

Update: Uh, holy shit. Deadline reports that Aaron Paul, Michael Pena, Teresa Palmer and Gal Gadot are all on board, so too is the previously reported Michael B. Jordan. Open Road will release the film in 2015.

While John Hillcoat hasn’t had a problem attracting names to his upcoming cop thriller “Triple Nine,” there’s been a problem with them sticking. Shia LaBeouf, Charlie Hunnam, Michael B. Jordan, Cate Blanchett and Christoph Waltz have all been linked at various times only to fall away, but like we said, finding replacements hasn’t been a problem.

Variety reports that Kate Winslet is in talks for the movie, which still has the recently-added Casey Affleck and Chiwetel Ejiofor attached. And hot damn, that is a helluva trio for this gritty tale. Penned by Matt Cook, the story centers on a group of crooked L.A. police officers who realize they must shoot one of their own in order to get away with planning a major heist. They choose as their victim a rookie and honorable young officer, but what they don’t know is that another cop has infiltrated the gang, and is working on a setup. No word yet on Winslet’s part, but we presume (and really hope) she’s taken Blanchett’s old role as a mobster’s wife who’s behind the whole thing.

No word yet on when this will shoot, but we’d guess it’ll probably depend on locking down the cast first.

  1. Fantastic. I have always loved Hillcoat. The Proposition is one of the best westerns I have ever seen. The Road was really good, with a few pacing issues. Lawless was also pretty good, just not very memorable. Hillcoat has a Sam Peckinpah air to him that I really like. He doesn't shy away from showcasing realistic on screen violence, and gets great performances out of his actors.

When I heard he was doing this I was excited to know that he was going to keep getting more work. After all of the casting problems I grew weary of it and thought he wasn't going to go anywhere. I'm so relived to know that Casey Affleck (one of the best actors in the last decade) is going to play a role in this, in addition to Michael Pena (extremely underrated), Chiwetel Ejiofor (a few stellar performances), and now Kate Winslet. (who I think fits the role perfectly, despite the fact that I really do believe she is absolutely overrated, and overacts too much), and Michael B. Jordan (whom I believe is going to end up becoming one of the hollywood greats within the next couple of decades).

I hope this film is more like The Proposition than it is Lawless though, in terms of style that is. The thing about Lawless is that it very much felt like a studio production type film, whereas The Proposition was raw and gritty.

  2. This cast is insane. I heard Winslet's character is like a Lady Macbeth puppeteer. Awesome. Sooooo happy she's back to picking interesting roles as usual. Labor Day was her first real misstep in my eyes…but hey, the fact that it happened after 20+ years in the business is pretty impressive. Of course she bounces back as usual with Triple Nine and her other upcoming projects, all of which look very dark & interesting.
