‘Justice League’ Cinematographer Says “I Really Hope We Get To See A Director’s Cut”

“A lot of things got cut,” Jason Momoa said succinctly about the version of “Justice League” that’s currently in cinemas. Indeed, it’s easy to see that the superhero team-up movie — overhauled and reshot as it was — was a patchwork affair of two different visions. Fans are already petitioning for Zack Snyder‘s director’s cut (which technically doesn’t exist, since he never finished the movie) to be released, and now they have someone who worked on the film in the corner.

Cinematographer Fabian Wagner, who worked on the Snyder part of the production but not on Whedon’s reshoots (2nd unit photographer Jean-Philippe Gossart stepped in due to scheduling issues), says there was a lot of material left out of the version of “Justice League” currently playing at a multiplex near you.

“This one was even shorter than I expected, so there are scenes that aren’t in there. I really hope we get to see a director’s cut, which will give us everything that we shot that didn’t make it in,” he told THR. “What I love about his [Snyder’s] director’s cuts is they are long, but he takes his time to tell the story. I’ve never watched any of his directors cut and thought ‘This is long.” Whether they are three hours long, or three hours and ten minutes, they always seemed to go quick.”

This will undoubtedly give more ammunition to Snyder fans, likely many of the same who claim that the longer edit of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is substantially better than the theatrical version. However, even for the morbidly curious, one wonders just how much was excised and plans changed from making two movies to one, and the order came down not to exceed two hours. Did Warner Bros. wind up throwing the baby out with the bathwater in trying to save “Justice League”? The footage sitting in whatever vault on whatever hard drive has the answer….
