Generally speaking in Hollywood, if you make money, you get to spend money, and certainly “Jurassic World” made a lot of money. On a budget of $150 million, Colin Trevorrow‘s revival of the “Jurassic Park” franchise earned a massive $1.6 billion worldwide, and proved that the global audience for dinosaurs and mayhem is huge. And so it follows that the followup is going to see Universal throwing more money at it then its predecessor, in what they likely hope will be an even bigger payday.

Speaking with El Pais, director J.A. Bayona — riding high out of TIFF with strong reviews for his upcoming “A Monster Calls” (read ours) — revealed that the budget would be $260 million for “Jurassic World 2.” Not much in the way of details about the story or setting of the followup has been shared at this point, however, with that kind of money, it’s clear the scale is going to be quite large, for what will be the middle film in a confirmed trilogy.
Still, even at $260 million, that’s far from the $378.5 million budget for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (though I can only imagine that with marketing, the “Jurassic World” sequel will come close if not pass that figure). And the numbers seem to suggest that Universal is banking on breaking the $1.5 billion mark again at the box office, and looking to go even higher. As always in Hollywood these days, it’s a game of taking big risks and hoping for even bigger rewards.
