Got a Tip?

Julie Taymor’s ‘The Tempest’ Delayed Until Hits Theaters 2010

Another day, another victim to the 2009 release schedule. Julie Taymor’s “The Tempest” has been indefinitely delayed by Miramax and is now likely to see the light of day sometime in 2010.. Update: The film was never on the 2009 docket, the original report and we might have been a little too over-eager and anxious here. It’s actually eyeing a Fall 2010 release date.

The rescheduling is being blamed on incomplete visual and special effects in this, Taymor’s re-envisioning of William Shakespeare’s nearly 400 year old tale. She’s working on “Spider-Man” the musical. We’ll have to keep our pants on.

The film will center around Prospera (Helen Mirren) — a role which was changed genders from the male Prospero in Shakespeare’s play — and her daughter Miranda (Felicity Jones) who find themselves shipwrecked with their crew on an island full of Prospera’s enemies including the deformed slave Caliban (Djimon Hounsou) and the airy spirit Ariel (Ben Whishaw).

Rounding off the amazing cast are the likes of comedian Russell Brand as the jester, Trinculo; Jeremy Irons as the King of Naples, Alonso; Reeve Carney (who is rumored to be Taymor’s Peter Parker in her ‘Spiderman’ musical) as the son of Alonso; Alan Cumming as Alonso’s brother; Chris Cooper as Prospera’s brother; Alfred Molina as the drunken butler Stephano; and Geoffrey Rush as Gonzalo, a royal adviser and old ally of Prospera’s. Surely, that cast alone is enough to spark your interest in this film? [RopesOfSilicon]
