It was in those halcyon days of 2010 when Judd Apatow announced he’d be producing a new Pee-Wee Herman movie. Nearly five years later, its possible that the Paul Reubens and Paul Rust co-written film will be released via Netflix.
That’s right folks, The Wrap is reporting that the as yet untitled Pee-Wee Herman movie is close to making a deal with the streaming giant, solidifying its stature as a worthy foe for studios and TV networks.
A new Pee-Wee movie makes perfect sense for Netflix, which in recent years has revived shows like “Arrested Development” and “The Killing.” And more recently, the company has moved heavily into original film content, signing a four-picture deal with Adam Sandler, acquiring documentaries for streaming release (such as "The Battered Bastards Of Baseballs"), and throwing their weight behind the martial arts sequel "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend."
Production on the untitled Pee-Wee Herman movie will begin in 2015. While we wait for the deal to finalize and for plot details and a director to be announced, right now you can watch episodes of “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse” on Netflix along with the one-off TV special from 1981 and the two movies “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” and “Big Top Pee-Wee.”
