“I was a Marvel kid growing up, but I was always DC-curious. And I see myself on the spectrum in between,” Joss Whedon recently told IGN. He has certainly dipped his toes in both waters. Before he was Marvel’s guiding creative force through the most profitable period in their history, he was hired in 2005 to write a script for a big-screen take on “Wonder Woman.” The project never coalesced, but Whedon reveals that while his sensibilities don’t always match, he would like to work on DC Comics properties.
“Sure. I’d be like ‘I have all these joke ideas.’ And they’d be like ‘No, we don’t do that here.’ I desperately wanted to do a Batman film — who doesn’t? And I wanted to do Wonder Woman,” he said. But there’s also characters at Marvel that, now that he’s leaving, he won’t be able to write for, including one particular web-slinger.
“Yeah [I’d like to have worked on Spider-Man], he’s the poster child. He’s the first book I read, and I think that’s true for a lot of people,” he told Yahoo. “There are so many things I would want to do, even with these characters [The Avengers], even with just one of these characters. But the fact of the matter is: they’re doing fine, and I’ve probably got to move on.”
However, the universe has a weird way of working, and it’s actually an old Whedon script that has resurfaced. Last fall, Liam Neeson signed up to star in “Suspension,” a screenplay Whedon sold way back in 1993, telling the story of Harry Monk, who is on his way back from spending 15 years in a New Jersey prison for shooting a cop, when he has to stop terrorists who have seized control of New York’s George Washington Bridge during a hellish traffic jam. And while Whedon is unsure if the project will “get off the ground,” he’s pretty excited nonetheless.
We are very curious to see what Whedon decides to do next. He’s conquered the superhero mountain, and clearly his name has become such that work he did over twenty years ago, is being tossed around Hollywood again. Many doors will be wide open and it’ll be interesting to see which one he walks through.
