So, “Man of Steel” flies into theaters with advance screenings tonight if you got your Walmart-branded tickets, so we can get back to talking about the Marvel universe, right? While Warner Bros. is getting their sea legs with their DC Comics properties, hoping Superman can lead them to a bright franchise future, Marvel is multiple movies and billions of dollars ahead, with much, much more to come. While WB figures out how to get their first team-up movie sorted out with “Justice League,” Marvel has already knocked out “The Avengers” and has “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Avengers 2” on the way. Mega-world-building!? Not so fast.
Bleeding Cool chatted with Joss Whedon recently and the writer/director revealed that the two monster superhero movies won’t be crossing paths in any significant way. “We’re following ‘Guardians’ at Shepperton [with ‘Avengers 2’] but we won’t be swapping cast members. Every movie is its own thing and has to be. Unless I take a lot of peyote and write a very different draft… and I’m not ruling that out,” he told the site. So don’t expect Rocket Rocket Raccon to high-five Black Widow any time soon.
But really, this is hardly a shock and echoes what Kevin Feige indicated earlier in the spring. “ ‘Guardians’ takes place within the continuity of the [other Marvel movies] but it’s on the other side of the universe,” he said, suggesting that any ties to the Marvel-verse will be tenuous.
But of course, as Whedon indicates, there is still some slight room for that change, and who knows, it might, but it wouldn’t be Marvel with some kind of passing references to what’s going on elsewhere. But it just won’t be a major factor in the story. So, there’s your bit of nerdery for the day. Share your feelings below.
