Got a Tip?

WB Told Joss Whedon To Change His Comedic ‘Justice League’ Opening Scene

The common narrative is that Warner Bros., upon seeing the blowback from “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” started pivoting to toward a lighter tone for their superhero franchise. Even DC Films honcho Geoff Johns declared the films needed more “heart, humor, and heroics” and said that the goal was to “make the movies fun.” However, one is beginning to wonder if anybody involved with these movies even knows what they want.

Justice League” opens with Batman taking down a criminal, played by “Mindhunter” star Holt McCallany. The whole scene mostly exists for Batman to discover a parademon, and set the plot wheels in motion. While there are a couple of quips during the sequence, it’s mostly a straight-laced and pretty forgettable action scene. However, according to McCallany, it was originally much funnier.

“I love Joss Whedon. My scene with Batman was originally conceived as a comedic scene. That’s how Joss wrote it, and that’s how we shot it,” he told Men’s Fitness (via Collider). “I thought it came out great, but the studio felt it would be a mistake to open the film with a completely comedic scene, so it was re-edited a little bit. I was disappointed, but when I got home to New York I found a bottle of my favorite champagne and a note from Joss that said ‘To Battles Lost. Gratefully, Joss.’ I can’t tell you how much it meant to me that he took the time to write to me. Joss Whedon is a class act. I had the letter framed.”

So, to put this in perspective, WB hired Whedon to write new scenes for the reshoots, because of his trademark ability to bring a breezier touch to geek fare. However, it seems they didn’t want him to go full Whedon. Honestly, it’s really beginning to sound like “Justice League” was micromanaged to death, and it’s not a shock that neither Snyder or Whedon really left their fingerprints on the finished film.

There’s surely more to be revealed about the post-production madness of “Justice League,” but it really seems like there too many cooks in the kitchen, and no chef to get them all in the line.

        • Sure…that’s why Wonder Woman (“not as terrible” LOL) got a 92 % Fresh at RT and rapturously positive reviews from the majority of film critics (not to mention the highest domestic gross of any DCEU film as well as the best opening-weekend-to-domestic-total box office multiplier of ANY superhero movie [DC or Marvel] since 2002’s Spider-Man). That’s why Wonder Woman (“not as terrible” LOL) is the fifth highest grossing superhero film of all time (only surpassed by two Nolan Batman movies and the two The Avengers films. That’s why Wonder Woman (“not as terrible” LOL) is the highest-grossing worldwide solo origin superhero film of all time. That’s why Wonder Woman (“not as terrible” LOL) became the only superhero film of 2017 to become a true blue pop culture phenomenon. Yep…because it was “not as terrible” as the horribly reviewed MOS (55 % rotten), BvS (27 % rotten), SS (26 % rotten), and JL (41 % rotten). It’s not even a contest…all of those films are not even close to WW (92 % fresh). Pretty awesome stats for a “not so terrible” film…LOL

  1. First off, I thought the opening scene was the “real” footage of Superman being asked questions by some kids? Secondly, since that also seemed to be new footage as well, judging from Cavills cgi mouth, what was Synders opening scene? I guess the world will never know.

  2. I’m not even going to bother with it. Three of the four movies that preceded it were either just okay or awful, and the trailers for Justice League were unspectacular. The DCEU has exhausted all of my good will, and they’re not getting any more of my money.

  3. Forgettable action scene? Really? I thought this scene with Batman (which actually comes second in the film) it was one of the better scenes in the movie (which is sparse with them). It felt true to the character and I wish a version of it (minus the Parademon) would have been what we got as an introduction to Batman in BvS

  4. I hate that, amid all the crap that DCEU has put out, they (well, Patty Jenkins) managed to create a truly great movie —Wonder Woman— powered by a truly memorable performance by Gal Gadot. I hate it because Patty, Gal, and the film deserve a much much better connected universe to play in. Now, whenever WB gets their MIERDA together and reboot their DC interconnected universe, they will probably recast Wonder Woman, which saddens me.

  5. Whoever the idiot was that okayed Zack Snyder should probably be fired. It was clear that people were NOT a fan of his DC movies and yet this person still thought it was a good idea to hire him a third time. That’s just piss poor management. I know they tried to correct their mistake by hiring joss whedon but when you’re in charge of 200 million dollars and protecting the image of what can and should be a multi billion dollar franchise, there is no room for those mistakes.

  6. I found Justice League to be a better whole movie than Wonder Woman actually. Wonder Woman is much better in parts, but much worse as well, while Justice League is a consistent “ok” throughout.

    • I’d love to be able to agree with you, but after the disappointment that was Wonder Woman and the horrible trailers for Justice League, I’ll just have to take your word for it.

        • But what do YOU think about Wonder Woman, Antonio? And has there ever been a time when you didn’t care for a movie that it seems the rest of the world loved? Or vice versa? Are you one of these neutered twerps who says “It was a good movie, I just didn’t like it”?
