Got a Tip?

Joseph Kosinski Lines Up Mystery Action Thriller, ‘Leap Year’ Director Michael Rowe Preps English-Language Debut

While “Oblivion” and “Tron: Legacy” director Joesph Kosinski hasn’t yet latched on to his next project yet, he’s got some choices. He’s long been attached to The Black Hole” remake along with a ‘Tron’ sequel, while this summer he got nabbed for “The Twilight Zone” and has a sci-fi series brewing at AMC too. And now another gig has landed on his desk.

Media Rights Capital, the bank accounts behind “Elysium” and “House Of Cards” among others, has nabbed a spec for a “grounded action thriller” for Kosinski to direct. The story, which is being kept secret for now, came from the brain of Kosinski, with Chris Cantwell and Chris Rogers (the upcoming AMC series “Hell & Catch Fire“) turning it into a script. And that’s it. So just add it to the To Do pile for Kosinski, and presumably at some point down the line he’ll get to it. [Deadline]

Meanwhile, Michael Rowe—who helmed the Camera d’Or-winning “Leap Year” that played the 2010 Cannes Film Festival—is now gearing up his English-language debut. “Rest Home” will center on “a retirement home whose life spirals out of control when he catches his wife with a lover, pushing him to the brink of insanity.” Melissa George and Roy Dupuis will star in the movie that has funding in place, with shooting scheduled to start early in 2014 in Montreal. Until then, Rowe is getting ready to roll out his latest effort, “Manto Acuífero” (“The Water Table” aka “The Well“)—produced by Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna—at the Morelia International Film Festival later this month. Lastly, Icelandic helmer Oskar Thor Axelsson (the Nicolas Winding Refn-produced “Black’s Game“) will get behind the camera for “Point Of Violence.” Penned by Tony Mosher and Christian Parkes, the movie “uses a sliding doors concept to tell the story of a hit man given the order to kill a woman who turns out to be a former lover. In one version, he carries out the hit, and in the other, he refuses and is forced to protect his old flame.” Well, we’ll give it points for originality we suppose. Production begins next year.
