Got a Tip?

Jon Favreau Cooks Up Indie Project ‘Chef’

nullWho would’ve thought the earnest, awkward young man who self-destructed while leaving a phone message for a girl in “Swingers” would eventually become one of the key players in the “Iron Man” franchise, create a contemporary Christmas classic with “Elf,” and helm blockbuster stuff like “Zathura” and “Cowboys & Aliens.” Well, no one really thought that. But with his gig on the musical “Jersey Boysfalling to the wayside (Clint Eastwood is now eyeing it), the filmmaker is returning to his indie roots.

Favreau will write, direct and star in “Chef,” which is not to be confused with the movie Bradley Cooper is attached to. Instead, this one will find Favreau playing an emotional chef running a restaurant in Los Angeles. Financing and all that fun stuff still needs to come together, but should all of those things get tied up, “Chef” could be Favreau’s next gig. But if not? Dude has options.

He’s still got “Magic Kingdom” being conjured at Disney, and last fall he signed up to helm the motorcycle flick “Battle For Bonneville” with Ryan Reynolds attached to star. But a return to the LA milieu that spawned “Swingers” has some potential, so we’ll wait to see how this all turns out. [Variety]
