Got a Tip?

Johnny Depp To Investigate The Murders Of Biggie & Tupac In Thriller ‘Labyrinth’

It kind of sucks to be Johnny Depp right now. The 53-year-old actor spent most of the 2000s as the biggest movie star in the world, thanks to the immense success of the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” franchise, but since the last installment in 2011, Depp’s had almost nothing but flops: his most successful film of the last five years was a ten-minute cameo as a wolf in “Into The Woods.” And worse, this year saw very convincing allegations that he’d physically abused his now-ex-wife Amber Heard.

With Hollywood being traditionally bad at punishing men who are awful to women, and a fifth ‘Pirates’ movie due to hit next summer, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Depp is done as a leading man, and Screen Daily has details of a new project that the star will be headlining, and it’s a… surprising one. According to the trade, Depp has signed on to “Labyrinth,” an independent film about the detective that investigated the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.

Hailing from Good Films, who backed this summer’s “The Infiltrator,” the project will see Depp play Russell Poole, an LAPD detective who was a rising star in the department until he accused a fellow officer of involvement in the death of Biggie Smalls. Stonewalling from the department saw him quit the force and become a private detective, when he also looked into the killing of Biggie’s rival Tupac.

Poole’s work was detailed in the 2002 non-fiction book “Labyrinth” by Randall Sullivan, and actor/writer Christian Contreras has adapted the project for Good, with “The Infiltrator” helmer Brad Furman set to direct. It’s certainly an intriguing set-up, though we have mixed feelings on Depp’s involvement: on one hand, it would be good to see him play a human being and not a caricature in something more grounded, on the other, he’s allegedly a horrible, drunken, abusive person. Anyway, “Labyrinth” is being sold in TIFF, so expect more news on the project soon.

  1. Amber Heard’s allegations were not in the least convincing, and her charges were all dropped. Stop perpetuating these false allegations. Also, since you include a photo of Johnny as Whitey Bulger in the critically acclaimed and decent box office success Black Mass, why not at least mention that he was in this film?

    • Don’t see an author attached to this biased, possibly libelous slam article. Thought Playlist was a serious theater industry site and not a gossip site. Her “evidence” was hardly convincing: all media slurs she refused to file legally with the LAPD. She only claimed he was abusive after he turned down her initial outrageous demands for indefinite cash support and property. She dropped her claims after finally getting nailed at her highly resisted deposition and being faced with Depp’s mountain of evidence against her. You write that he’s “allegedly a horrible, drunk and abusive person.” Well she is a documented domestic partner abuser, with other serious legal offenses stemming back to the early 2000s. She’s an alleged extortionist, drug addict, drunk, narcissist, dog abuser.

    • Exactly. I thought the same thing, did this tool bag not see Black Mass? Shame on them. Another millennia journo wanna be writing a blog for free after bogging mommy and daddy down with 100 of thousands of dollars in student loans then blaming them and their generation. Johnny Depp is a fabulous actor.

  2. Oliver Lyttelton;

Your personal opinion of Mr. Depp’s career is highly distasteful. Try simply writing an article about the upcoming film, one that is very much of interest and merit, without your own disdainful remarks, you may find you will be allowed to write further articles in the future.

I highly suggest this site remove all of the false allegations against Mr. Depp, and accusations of his personal life and matters. If one followed the matter with regard to the divorce, you would see all of the allegations were incredibly false. Complete fabrications in an attempt to destroy an innocent human being. Please, look up the Court Documents and Exhibits.

Articles such as this often find them themselves immersed in a bit of a legal tangle. I doubt Playlist would appreciate the irony.

Take due notice and govern yourself accordingly.

  3. It doesn’t suck to be Johnny Depp, not anymore now that AH is out of the picture.

It must suck to still talk about the “allegedly” things though. Since every false allegation has been resolved into oblivion after they settled on his conditions, those conditions even including dropping the lawsuit against Doug Stanhope and 20 John Does.

    • I read one yesterday that said in stark contrast to this that Marilyn Manson was out of line because Johnny hasn’t suffered one bit, his career is still full steam. They need to make up their minds. I can’t stand these Amber stans. Who gives them a platform? This generation wonders why they don’t get hired by real journalistic outlets, they don’t know how to be unbiased. This guy has 6 followers on Twitter and he stans Elon Musk. He’s shamelessly trying to get Ambers attention.

      • I saw you getting at it/them yesterday on dlisted. dlisted and pajiba are filled with people (mostly women I think) that are soo filled with hate it’s unbearable. I try not to meddle wit them anymore ; )

        • Lmao! They are violent women and men over there. For people who are supposed to be sticking up for a woman who was supposedly abused, they sure do like to abuse women. I went right back at them and an ugly side of me came out. Sorry about that but they were vile. What a bunch of hypocrites.

  4. The first paragraph sure wasn’t necessary. I didn’t follow that story at all and I’m sure not coming here to read that filthy judgemental crap. Just give me the news pal!

    • He’s Canadian who cares what he has to say. This is laughable. I’ll send it off to someone I know and see what they think. It maybe worth it but blogs are generally protected if they’re giving opinions. He states it as fact though so he may have some legal issues. Johnny may not want to give him the time of day. These types of people like to do this to get noticed and they drag celebrities so they will get their names out there. I suggest ignoring him and just leaving ugly comments.

  5. I just want to leave with a comment that you’re blog is full of crap and you should take your one sided opinion back to Canada. We don’t want to hear your personal opinion on Johnny Depp, we wanted to hear about his new movie. So stick it you millennial baby wipe.

  6. LOL to the Depp fangirls here having a meltdown, sadly for them, this seem to be the wide opinion about Johnny Depp now
But the good news for you is that his career won’t suffer. See Woody Allen, Mel Gibson, Roman Polanski, Sean Penn or Michael Fassbender. When being a man awful to a woman had any cost (damages) to any white man’s career in Hollywood? Never…

  7. “It kind of sucks to be Johnny Depp right now.”

A super rich man living his life to the fullest and doing whatever he wants. Yeah, it kind of sucks to be him indeed. *snort*

  8. The only toxic and bad thing in the life of Johnny was someone named Amber Heard. Just take a look at pics of Johnny before, during and soon after the relationship between Johnny and Amber
Johnny is undoubtedly one of today’s best actors.
Paid critics are trying to destroy Johnny since TLR, since the very moment that Amber was part of Johnny’s life.
Amber claimed to have been abused, but did not have any evidence to show that. Neutral witnesses, as LAPD, said they didn’t see any injury on Amber’s face. Amber was also unable to prove that Doug didn’t say the truth in The wrap article where he says she was blackmailing Johnny.
And if the letter from Amber’s lawyer asking 50k to drop the charges is not enough evidence to show that Amber is a blackmailer, so I don’t know what is.
Good deeds cultivate a good world, evil deeds cultivate a bad world, for everyone, including those who practice it, as well as Amber and who else Mr Oliver Lyttleton?

  9. I love this quote from Anton Ego, Ratatouille – “But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.”
