If you were hoping to see a Keanu Reeves double feature on May 21, 2021 and go from “The Matrix 4” to “John Wick 4,” we have bad news for you. Like every other studio out there, Lionsgate just announced a bunch of new release dates for their upcoming feature films, including pushing back “John Wick 4” a full year. Likewise, “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” also moves a full year. More surprisingly, however, is “Chaos Walking” keeping its 2021 release date.
THR reports that Lionsgate re-dated its theatrical slate. The first casualty is the Keanu-off of May 2021, which would have seen the once-in-a-lifetime event of two Keanu Reeves-led franchises premiering on the same day. To see how John Wick enacts revenge against The High Table, a mysterious organization that controls all assassins in the franchise’s universe you will have to wait until May 27, 2022, unfortunately. Falling from the roof of the Continental may have not killed John Wick, but a pandemic did push him back.
Meanwhile, the pandemic also forced Jicksaw to play a game it could not win, as the Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson-starring spin-off of the “Saw” franchise moved from its initial release date of two weeks from now, until a year from now on May 21, 2021. To accompany the news, the Twitter account for “Spiral” sent out a statement to fans of the franchise, saying “We understand and share our disappointment. We appreciate your continued support and hope you stay safe during this difficult time. Additionally, if anyone has seen Billy the Puppet can you please let us know? He hasn’t shown up to video meetings in a while.”
Other films with changed release dates include “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” the sequel to the Ryan Reynolds and Sam Jackson action thriller, which was pushed back to August 20, 2021. On the other hand, the meta Nicolas Cage movie “The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent” retains its March 19, 2021 release date.
