EW reports that in honor of his “Grease” co-star Olivia Newton-John‘s death six months ago, John Travolta recreates “Summer Nights” for T-Mobile’s new Super Bowl commercial. In the spot, Travolta teams up with best friends/funny guys Zach Braff and Donald Faison to plug T-Mobile’s service to the tune of his duet with Newton-John in the 1978 films.
But is it a worthy homage? See for yourself, as Travolta recreates some of his signature poses and moves from his role as Danny Zuko. Of course, there’s no overt reference to Newton-John in the one-minute spot, but it’s obvious T-mobile teamed up with Travolta to pay tribute to the late singer/actress.
After Newton-John’s death last August, Travolta took to social media to remember his longtime friend. “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better,” wrote the actor on Instagram. “Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!”
Travolta’s T-Mobile commercial is the latest in a recent influx of “Grease” tributes following Newton-John’s passing. Another example? Harry Styles dressed up as Danny Zuko to sing Newton-John’s ballad “Hopelessly Devoted To You” for a Halloween performance. Paramount+ has a prequel to the 1978 film on the way this year, too, entitled “Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies.” Of course, the 1978 film and its 1982 sequel with Michelle Pfieffer and Maxwell Caufield take inspiration from the 1971 musical, which at one point was Broadway’s longest-running show (it currently ranks 16th on the all-time list).
But enough history lessons. Watch Travolta’s tribute to Olivia Newton-John in T-Mobile’s Super Bowl commercial below.
