Fox411 is reporting that the loveable, sarcastic goof from “The Office,” John Krasinski, is the studio favorite to take on the lead role in the forthcoming big screen version of “Captain America.” Color us surprised and somewhat dismayed.
According to the site’s sources, Krasinski has read four times and screen tested twice and remains the favorite among “key decision makers.” He is also apparently already reading opposite potential female leads, which if true, means that the actor is definitely being eyed as leading candidate.
As fans know, the previously announced longlist of actors included Chace Crawford, Garrett Hedlund, Mike Vogel (“Cloverfield”), Scott Porter (“Friday Night Lights”), Patrick Flueger (“The 4400”) and Michael Cassidy. However, according to Fox411’s source at Marvel, “They are not really looking at the other guys, so it’s time to get ready to work with [Krasinski].” Dane Cook was apparently even given a shot as the fratboy comic revealed on Twitter that he’s even auditioned, but that the studio is “going young.” And with Kransinski as the front runner, that assessment certainly bears out.
If Kransinki signs, as we previously reported, his payday will be in the ballpark of a paltry $300,000. That said, it will be multi-film deal and it will certainly raise the profile of the actor from sitcom star to franchise, leading man status. We’re really not convinced he’s the right guy for this role, but then again, we’ve only really seen him in his “The Office” role, so perhaps he has more to offer than quick quips and raising his eyebrows at the camera. That said, we still stand by our suggestion that Brain Geraghty should be Captain America.
Once Krasinski is locked, the other roles will apparently be cast, and we’re guessing the film will get in front of cameras once “The Office” wraps (its thoroughly disappointing) season. “Captain America” is set for a July 22, 2011 release.
Seems like they're hoping for a Ryan Reynolds thing here. But while Krasinski is a handsome guy, he's also just kinda goofy looking. Would be hard to take him seriously as an action hero. Then again, people had the same discussions about Michael Keaton playing Batman.
I like Krasinski, but Jeremy Renner is the perfect Cap!

Maybe they're going for a 'lame' theme? They pick the lamest choice to play one of the lamest superheroes. I wish this was just a joke.
It could work with Krasinski playing Cap in a similar way Billy Campbell play Cliff in The Rocketeer.
Johnston directed that one with a bit of comedy & action, similar to how Marvel has approached Iron Man.
This is a very interesting choice. I'm excited to see it. Out of left field it may be, but it's far, far more encouraging than putting some CW mannequin in the role.
Frankly Krasinski was the only appealing candidate out of their casting list.
Away We Go showed he had range I'm more interested in this film now.
Joe Johnnson again is the director so i don't care!
