“Solo: A Star Wars Story” is not even a month away, but today, we’re looking ahead, past the anthology film. Recently, in an interview with Yahoo, “Star Wars” actor John Boyega let something slip about the upcoming ‘Episode IX’ that might be a little bit of a spoiler.
“I can’t wait to start shooting the next and final leg of the franchise,” said Boyega. “The first step is growing out my hair, so you can wait for the trailer to see why.”
While the comment seems pretty tame at first glance, the implication is slightly startling. This is far from news, but the act of growing out hair takes a while. This has led many people to speculate that there’s going to be a significant time-jump between ‘The Last Jedi’ and the untitled ‘Episode IX.’
Time-jumps between films is nothing new for “Star Wars.” In the past, there was always the passage of tie between sequels. However, that changed when ‘The Last Jedi’ was released. That film picked up immediately where ‘The Force Awakens’ left off, with Rey handing the lightsaber to Luke, and Luke controversially flinging the weapon over his shoulder. Now, it appears that incoming director J.J. Abrams is going to let a little bit of time pass between Rian Johnson’s film and his own.
As everyone who saw ‘The Last Jedi’ knows, the ending saw the Resistance decimated, with just a shred of hope for the future. That would lead us to believe that Abrams is interested in allowing the Resistance to lick its wounds off-screen and come back stronger for the final film in the new trilogy.
Since everything has been analyzed to death about ‘The Last Jedi,’ this time-jump news will probably lend some credence to those predicting that the little boy at the very end of the film is now going to play a major role. However, what this actually does for Abrams is allowing for a bit of distance between the controversial ‘The Last Jedi’ and his own ‘Episode IX.’
In that respect, maybe a time-jump is just what the doctor ordered for the galaxy far, far away.
