Before he became an A-list actor and one of the leads in the “Star Wars” universe, John Boyega really broke out in 2011, thanks to the sci-fi action film, “Attack the Block.” And though that film didn’t necessarily become a massive blockbuster, “Attack the Block” did develop a pretty strong cult following and earn critical acclaim quickly after its debut at the SXSW Film Festival. Now, a decade later, it would appear that Boyega and writer-director Joe Cornish are deep into discussions about reteaming for another installment in the ‘Attack’ film universe.

Speaking with EW, in honor of the film’s 10th anniversary, Joe Cornish was asked about “Attack the Block” and the possibility of a sequel. The original film followed the story of a woman that teamed up with teens in her neighborhood to fight against a group of menacing aliens. And while he didn’t share details about what a sequel might look like, the filmmaker did tease that he and Boyega have discussed the possibility at length.
“We’re working on [a sequel] at the moment,” said Cornish. “John Boyega was round at my place a few weeks ago and we sat in the garden — socially distanced — talking about story ideas until it was so dark we couldn’t see each other. So, yeah, we’re working on that.”
This isn’t the first time that Cornish teased a sequel for “Attack the Block.” Just last year, the filmmaker said he and Boyega discussed the possibility of reteaming on a new film to continue the story. But, of course, the pandemic really screwed all that up.
Of course, work on a new “Attack the Block” film will have to wait a bit longer. Not only has the pandemic delayed pretty much everything, but Cornish (and Boyega, for that matter) has a pretty busy schedule coming up. In addition to a new Netflix series, it appears the filmmaker has another feature he’d like to make right after.
“I’m doing a bunch of stuff. I’m doing this show for Netflix called ‘Lockwood & Co.,’ which we’re shooting in a month or two, that I’m writing and directing,” he explained. “Then, I have another feature. Yeah, a bunch of stuff. I think it’s the same with everybody — loads of stuff that’s been cooking for the last year, waiting to sprint as soon as it’s allowed to. But ‘Lockwood & Co.’ is the next thing.”
So, while it has been a full decade since “Attack the Block” wowed audiences at SXSW, it would appear that another story in the universe is going to be some years off still. But Boyega and Cornish are definitely working on something.
