Bruno Dumont is a filmmaker that doesn’t know the meaning of the term “playing it safe.” Films like “Hors Satan,” “L’il Quinquin,” and last year’s “Jeannette” are perfect examples of Dumont’s penchant for taking what could be straightforward films and flipping them on their head. The latter of which follows the childhood of the famous Joan of Arc, but with a soundtrack comprised of Death Metal. Yeah, it’s out there.
Dumont actually revisits the Joan of Arc story from his previous metal musical biopic with his newest film, making its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, simply titled “Joan of Arc.” And in honor of the film’s upcoming world premiere, we’re thrilled to be able to bring the first two clips exclusively to our readers.
A spiritual successor of sorts, “Joan of Arc” continues the story of the historical figure, in all its harrowing detail, but is not a true sequel to his previous “Jeannette.” However, keeping with his trend of upending expectations, Dumont has brought along the young actress, Lise Leplat Prudhomme, from the previous film to play the titular character in the new entry. And no, she hasn’t magically aged ten years in between films. Instead, what you’re left with is a talented 10-year-old actress going toe-to-toe with great veterans of the craft and succeeding in ways that will shock you.
The film stars Prudhomme, Jean-François Causeret, Daniel Dienne, Fabien Fenet, Robert Hanicotte, and Yves Habert. “Joan of Arc” is, of course, written and directed by Dumont.
“Joan of Arc” has its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. A worldwide theatrical rollout has not been formally announced.
Here are the two clips and the film’s synopsis:
In the 15th century, both France and England stake a blood claim for the French throne. Believing that God had chosen her, the young Joan leads the army of the King of France. When she is captured, the Church sends her for trial on charges of heresy. Refusing to accept the accusations, the graceful Joan of Arc will stay true to her mission.
