Got a Tip?

Jeremy Renner Talks The Difficult Shoot Of ‘Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation’ Plus Check Out New TV Spots

Mission: Impossible — Rogue NationEarlier this year, chatter surfaced about rumored problems on the set of "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation." Paramount was apparently unhappy with the film’s ending, requiring both a rewrite and a reshoot. However, director Christopher McQuarrie vigorously denied those reports, and certainly the studio’s decision to move ‘Rogue Nation’ ahead to this summer from its previously planned slot of Christmas Day is a vote of confidence in the picture. And while the early interviews with the cast and director seem to indicate everything went swimmingly, talking with Playboy, Jeremy Renner suggested that things on set weren’t as ideal. At least not for him.

"This ‘Mission’ was like all the ‘Mission’s—great action set pieces with an idea of a story somewhere in there. There have been four successful versions before this one, so why would I fight the process? I just went and gave to the best of my ability in the scenario I was in," the actor said. "Now, was it the best scenario for me? The best at what I’m good at? Fuck, no. Not having any information about what the heck is going on doesn’t empower any artists to be at the best of their ability. I trusted Tom Cruise, [director] Chris McQuarrie and the studio, and I went with it."

Renner ultimately blames any problems he might’ve had on being away from his daughter, but one does get the sense things weren’t as smooth as they could’ve been. "I love Tom, Simon Pegg and everybody else who is in that movie. I love my character. I was happy to be doing it. The ultimate challenge and difficulty on that movie and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron‘ was that they both shot in London, which took me 11 hours away from Ava. That was what caused any cantankerousness, agitation or negative feelings I had about the whole moviemaking experience," Renner said.

Now, plenty of blockbusters have bumps on the road, and don’t impact the final movie at all, and that could very well be the case for ‘Rogue Nation,’ which has certainly pushed itself to the limit in terms of spectacle.

The latest installment of the Cruise led franchise arrives on July 31st. Check out some TV spots and new pics below.
