It’s probably safe to say that Hawkeye is really no one’s favorite Avenger. No slight to Jeremy Renner, but it’s hard to make a glorified archer stand out alongside the likes of Iron Man, Ant-Man, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Hulk….you get the idea. Nevertheless, Clint Barton is a character with a backstory, and Renner was eager to explore these aspects in Joss Whedon‘s “The Avengers.” However, given that his character was pretty much a zombie for most of that movie, he didn’t really get the chance. And as the actor recently shared, that experience wasn’t so fun.
Dropping by the London Film And Comic-Con, Renner got real about his unhappy time making the movie —so much so that he was nearly baiting Marvel and Whedon to toss him out of the film.
“I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go round like a zombie, I’m like Loki’s minion. And I’m still not even sure who Hawkeye was at that point. So I’m a little frustrated, because I was so excited to figure out who Hawkeye was. I just had a heart attack in every scene. I’d just be walking with… Scarlett Johansson, and just like be ugh [clutching my chest]. And they said, ‘What are you doing man?’ I’m giving you an option if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack,” Renner said.
Since he was clearly given much more to do in “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” and “Captain America: Civil War,” Renner has chilled out a bit, saying that he “can’t wait to explore him more.” But it’s perhaps understandable how one might be irritated to sign up to play a superhero only to have pretty much everything interesting about the role taken away. Though there is something to be said about being professional.
At any rate, this isn’t the first time Renner has been honest about his initial misgivings about playing Hawkeye, but it all seems to have worked out, so water under the bridge. [Comic Book Movie]
Yes Renner is so unprofessional. Just like in that outtake for Age of Ultron where at the end of the scene he literally tried to murder Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I can’t believe nobody tried to rescue Poor Aaron. Maybe it was because they HAD A SENSE OF HUMOR, unlike Playlist writers.
No, I think Renner really is kind of an asshole. Fine actor, though.

I actually loved him in the first one. I thought he was a great bonus villian for the movie. And he looked badass with those contacts saying “a diversion………and an eyeball”
Has he found anything interesting about the character yet? I mean, I love Hawkeye in the comics, but Renner’s version isn’t nearly as interesting.
Hawkeye is the best avenger in the comics. If Captain America is who they all want to be, Hawkeye is who they really are. Renner caught so much crap for being brainwashed in the first movie, it was a relief for me to see him unhappy about it. I think ppl forget that so many film journalists, including those from the playlist and indiewire, spent most of 2012 and 2013 attributing the blandness of the character to his performance and not Joss’ writing. It was a waste of such a talented actor–you don’t hire Jeremy Renner to be an empty emotionless robot when he’s gotten two Oscar nods for intense performances. TBH i thought hawkeye was the best thing of Age of Ultron and a big redemption for renner, but I’m hoping the best lies ahead for him. That said, I dunno if any studio has been able to use Renner’s talent right in a franchise film yet. There’s so much there, Hawkeye could be an excellent avenue for him, but the opportunity has to be there. Preferably along with an R-rating, but that’ll never happen unless Netflix.
dude, his backstory (or at least his personal life) was so simple and mundane that I loved it! and I just keep hearing these coments like “uugh that part in hawkeye’s house was so stupid” and for me is the smartest part of the movie, there’s a lot going on with the characters in that sequence
