Jennifer Lawrence has reached the upper echelon of A-list actor royalty over the past few years. In a relatively short time, she’s starred in a massive franchise (“Hunger Games”), worked with some of the best filmmakers around, and earned no less than four Oscar nominations (and one win). So, it’s obvious that she is in control of what projects she does. And as for the future, she has a fairly short list of directors she’s anxiously awaiting the chance to collaborate with.
In a recent rapid-fire interview with Vogue, Jennifer Lawrence is asked 73 questions about her life and career. One of those questions actually asks the actress to name the directors she would like to work with at some point in her career. Her answer covers the gamut of various styles, as she names Ari Aster, Leos Carax, and the Coen Brothers.
Interestingly, when asked what is the best film she’s seen in recent years, she names Aster’s “Hereditary.” So, it’s clear she has an affinity for the filmmaker’s work, even though he’s only ever done two films (“Midsommar” being the other). Carax, of course, is an acclaimed filmmaker who recently released “Annette” but is probably best known for his wild film, “Holy Motors.” We can’t even begin to guess what a collaboration between Lawrence and Carax might look like.
Perhaps the most difficult potential partnership might be with the Coen Brothers. While the directing duo has a number of big projects over the course of their career, over the past couple of years, they’ve exclusively worked solo. So, it might be that Lawrence would have to pick Ethan and/or Joel to work with on different films.
Another question about directing was posed to Lawrence, but this time, she was asked if directing is something she’d like to try herself in the future.
“Sure. Maybe. I don’t know. There are so many better directors than me, but maybe,” Lawrence replied.
Obviously, if Lawrence ever wanted to try her own hand at directing a film, she’d be able to do so easily, as studios would probably line up to bid on that project. But in the meantime, you can see Lawrence in the upcoming film, “Causeway,” as well as a number of other films she has lined up, including “No Hard Feelings” and the tentatively titled, “Sue.”
