Jeff Goldblum is one of those people who could make the ingredients on your cereal box sound interesting. His personality, which some think is a little over the top, is endlessly entertaining. So, when Vanity Fair sat him down for a career retrospective video, you know it’s going to be must-see.
Over the course of the 10-minutes video, Goldblum talks about a number of his more popular films, starting with “Death Wish” and going all the way up to “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Isle of Dogs.” He starts the whole video by explaining how he’s a lucky man that’s lived a lucky life.
“I’m a lucky guy, this is one of the themes of my lucky life because I coincided..I intersected with important directors in some of their most important movies,” said the actor.
When he says that, it’s endearing, but over the course of the video, you realize he wasn’t lying or understating the amount of good luck he’s experienced. Nothing illustrates it more than his initial meeting with Woody Allen about “Annie Hall.”
“I just went and met [Woody Allen]…[I said] ’Hello, nice to meet you.’ He said, ‘That’s all I need.’ I said, ‘Really? Do you want me to do anything for you? [He said] ‘no, no, no, no,’” said the actor.
Of course, his talent, and general way about him, probably helped secure the part in the classic film, but that has to go down as the quickest audition in history. His luck continued later in his life, when he was up for a role in the classic Steven Spielberg film, “Jurassic Park.”
In preparation for his meeting with Spielberg, he read the novel by Michael Crichton and was happy about being considered for the Ian Malcolm character. However, when he met with the filmmaker, Goldblum was told that the Ian Malcolm role was being cut out and merged with Alan Grant. Somehow, Goldblum convinced Spielberg to keep him in the film, and the rest is history.
It’s not just fans that are enamored with Goldblum’s personality. Clearly, it’s everyone in Hollywood, as well. So yeah, it’s fair to say that Goldblum has most definitely lived a “lucky life.”
