Did you enjoy Jason Reitman’s legacy sequel, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife?” Well, if so, you’re in luck because the filmmaker is ready to branch out into the animated realm with the ‘Busters.
According to Variety, Jason Reitman and producer Gil Kenan are developing a new animated “Ghostbusters” series. While the exact plot details are unknown at this time, you have to assume it will exist in the same universe of the films, including the aforementioned sequel. Will it continue the adventures of the new cast or be a flashback series that continues the story of the original folks? That we don’t know, but either way, you have to assume “Ghostbusters” fans are ecstatic.
Reitman, of course, is the son of Ivan Reitman, the legendary filmmaker who directed the first two “Ghostbusters” films. From there, discussions were had for years about a possible third film, but nothing came to fruition. Then in 2016, there was Paul Feig’s reboot, “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call,” which made decent box office money but was controversial upon its release, to say the least. Jason Reitman seemingly righted the course with ‘Afterlife,’ which debuted in theaters last year and was pretty well embraced by the fandom.
As for the animated side of things, there is a strong history of “Ghostbusters” TV shows. “The Real Ghostbusters” and “Extreme Ghostbusters” were popular during their run, combining for nearly 200 episodes. So, there is definitely precedent for the franchise succeeding in animation. We’ll just have to wait and see where this new show lands and if fans are willing to embrace the first real expansion of the franchise in many years.
