Got a Tip?

Jane Campion, Denis Villeneuve, Steven Spielberg Among 2022 DGA Film Nominees

A day after “Succession” dominated the television nominations, the Directors Guild of America announced the key film nominees for the 2022 DGA Awards. To no surprise, “The Power of the Dog’s” Jane Campion, “Dune’s” Denis Villeneuve, and “Belfast’s” Kenneth Branagh made the list. They were joined by “West Side Story’s” Steven Spielberg and “Licorice Pizza’s” Paul Thomas Anderson.

It goes without saying that historically, the DGA nominees for feature film and the Oscar for Best Directing rarely line up. In fact, the last time the same five were nominated for both honors was in 2010. Last year, Aaron Sorkin was nominated by the DGA for “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” but Thomas Vinterberg earned the Oscar nod for “Another Round.”

Filmmakers likely to knock one of the DGA nominees out when it comes to the Oscars include “Licorice Pizza’s” Paul Thomas Anderson, “Drive My Car’s” Ryusuke Hamaguchi, “Worst Person in the World’s” Joachim Trier, or “Nightmare Alley’s” Guillermo del Toro,” among others.

Netflix dominated the First-Time Feature Film category as “The Lost Daughter’s” Maggie Gyllehnaal, “Passing’s” Rebecca Hall, “Prayers for the Stolen’s” Tatiana Huezo, and “tick, tick…BOOM’s” Lin-Manuel Miranda were all recognized. They were joined by “Pig’s” Michael Sarnoski and “Shiva Baby’s” Emma Seligman.

The 2022 DGA Awards will be handed out on March 12.
